Hours: Monday – Friday: 2 p.m. to 10 p.m.; Weekend & On-call Emergency availability; hours may vary; overtime is a normal occurrence during certain periods of the year.Job Description:This position involves the performance of all mechanical and operation tasks in the maintenance, repair and operation of a diesel or electric power plant at an apprentice level, and is expected to perform the skilled and mechanical work necessary to maintain and ensure operation of the power plant. Employee is responsible for maintaining the plant in a clean and orderly condition as well as assisting in overhauling large diesel or electric generator units as well as power plant auxiliary equipment. They are expected to perform routine mechanical tasks using hand and power tools. Employees should exhibit ability to think and act quickly in an emergency situation. Does related work as required. Operates one or more units in a large diesel powered or electric generating plant, when necessary.Does preventive maintenance on power plant auxiliary equipment.Maintains plant in a clean and orderly condition.Assists in the overhaul of the large natural gas units or electric generator machinery.Assists in the maintenance, overhaul or replacement of all auxiliary equipment.Assists in the inspection and maintenance of plant instruments.Performs routine mechanical tasks using hand and some power tools.Reads electric, gas and water meters; may maintain daily records of readings.May do routine service on automotive equipment.May assist other departments in their work when required. Experience: One year of experience in the operation and/or maintenance of mechanical equipment such as gas engines, diesel engines or electric generating equipment.Essential knowledge, skills and abilities: Working knowledge of the construction and operation of large diesel or electric generating engines; working knowledge of electric generators and the auxiliary equipment associated with such engines and equipment; working knowledge of the occupational hazards and safety precautions necessary for this operation; good knowledge in the use of hand and power tools; skill in operating diesel engines, electric generators, auxiliary equipment and hand and power tools; basic understanding of electricity; ability to follow oral and written instructions; ability to think and act quickly in emergency situations.
