The West Islip Union Free School District is seeking highly qualified and compassionate professionals to join our student support services team as a Special Education Teaching Assistant for the 2026-2027 school year. We are looking for an individual dedicated to professional growth who is passionate about creating inclusive, supportive learning environments and collaborating closely with classroom teachers to ensure the success of all students. This individual will play an integral role in reinforcing instruction, implementing vital student accommodations, and fostering behavioral and academic success in line with our mission, “Every Student, Every Day!” Certification/Qualification : Teaching Certification or Teaching Assistant Certification Special Education Teaching Assistant Responsibilities : Assist the certified classroom teacher in delivering daily instruction focused on essential life skills, including personal hygiene, practical communication, functional academics, and community-based living skills. Support the implementation of individualized functional accommodations, adaptive strategies, and positive behavior intervention plans as outlined in student IEPs/504 plans. Reinforce teacher-led lessons by guiding individual students or small groups through practical daily living tasks, vocational training activities, and hands-on functional exercises. Prepare, adapt, and maintain specialized instruction materials, assist tools, and task-analysis visual schedules to foster maximal student independence. Support student safety and independence during daily routine transitions, personal care management, and lunch periods.. Continuously monitor, record, and communicate student engagement, behavioral data, and functional skill progress under the direct supervision of the special education teacher.
