ASSISTANT PRINCIPAL MIDDLE SCHOOL (Anticipated) The West Islip Union Free School District is seeking a dedicated and innovative educator to join our administrative leadership team as a Middle School Assistant Principal for the 2026-2027 school year. Middle school is a time of immense transitional growth. We are looking for a leader who truly understands the unique academic, social, and emotional needs of early adolescents. The ideal candidate will be a highly visible, positive force in our building who excels at building relationships with students, partnering with families, and supporting faculty to maintain a safe, thriving school culture. This is a probationary opening for an instructional leader who thrives in a collaborative environment and is committed to the success of all students in line with our mission, “Every Student, Every Day.” Our next assistant principal will be a "solution-focused" leader who embodies: Relational Leadership: High emotional intelligence with a proven ability to connect with middle school students, diffuse conflict, and foster a sense of belonging. Collaborative Problem-Solving: A natural communicator who works closely with the Principal, faculty, school counselors, non-instructional staff, and parents to support student success. Fairness & Consistency: A balanced approach to student advocacy and accountability, leading with empathy and clear expectations. Adaptability: The flexibility to handle the fast-paced, complex nature of a middle school day with calm and confidence. We are seeking a candidate with a proven track record of strong foundational knowledge in: Student Culture & Discipline: Experience implementing Restorative Practices, PBIS (Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports), and proactive character education. Academic Support & Intervention: Familiarity with the MTSS/RtI framework at the secondary level, including academic and behavioral interventions for diverse learners. Instructional Supervision: Knowledge of NYS Learning Standards (Grades 6-8) and experience with the observation, evaluation, and professional development of faculty. School Operations & Safety: Experience with middle school scheduling, state assessment administration, student attendance procedures, and comprehensive school safety protocols. Extracurricular Engagement: A commitment to supporting and supervising after-school activities, athletics, and clubs to promote a vibrant student life. Qualifications & Requirements: Certification: Valid New York State Certification as a School Building Leader (SBL), School District Leader (SDL), or School District Administrator (SDA). Experience: Strong classroom teaching experience; prior leadership experience is a plus. Skillset: High level of technological literacy, strong communication skills, and a data-informed approach to student attendance and behavior.
