ASSISTANT DIRECTOR OF SPECIAL EDUCATION (ELEMENTARY) The West Islip Union Free School District is seeking a visionary professional to serve as the Assistant Director of Special Education (Elementary). The successful candidate will be a collaborative leader capable of working effectively with all stakeholders as a dedicated advocate for our students. We are looking for a highly organized individual who demonstrates operational excellence, a growth mindset, and the ability to assist with the development of annual budgets and grants. Superior verbal and written communication skills are essential to provide leadership in the development and implementation of elementary programs that ensure academic success and social-emotional growth for our youngest learners. Required Qualifications & Certifications Administrative Certification: Valid New York State School District Leader (SDL) or School District Administrator (SDA) certification. Experience: Minimum of seven years of experience in a school setting as a professional in special education. Clinical/Pedagogical Background: Strong preference for candidates with experience in elementary-level instruction, diagnostic assessment, or behavioral intervention. Instructional Leadership & Program Oversight Elementary Program Review: Continuously evaluate the effectiveness of in-district elementary special education programs and service delivery models. Curriculum Development: Lead the development and adaptation of curriculum to meet the needs of diverse learners at the elementary level. Staff Supervision: Share the required responsibility of observing and evaluating special education staff to ensure instructional excellence. Professional Development: Facilitate training and PD focused on special education topics such as development of IEPs, research based interventions, supporting and collaborating with paraprofessionals. Behavioral Management: Oversee the development of data-driven Functional Behavioral Assessments (FBAs) and Behavior Intervention Plans (BIPs) for the elementary population. Social-Emotional Learning: Champion the integration of SEL and mental health programs within the elementary school environment. Administrative Mandates & Compliance CSE & 504 Chairing: Demonstrate extensive knowledge and experience in chairing Committee on Special Education (CSE) and Section 504 meetings for elementary-aged students. Plan Development: Oversee the rigorous creation and data-collection processes for Individualized Education Programs (IEPs) and 504 Plans via Frontline/IEP Direct. Regulatory Compliance: Maintain expert-level knowledge of NYS Commissioner’s Regulations Part 200/201, Least Restrictive Environment (LRE) mandates, and STAC procedures.
