You need to be flexible, patient, and open to change to excel in this role. As well you should be proficient in Data collection and analysisAssessment, progress monitoring, and school-wide practices to promote learningAcademic/learning, mental health, and behavioral interventionsPrevention and intervention servicesSpecial education services Realistically, we need someone with the proper certifications. However, our school psychologists provide direct support and interventions to students, consult with teachers, families, and other school-employed mental health professionals to improve support strategies, and work with staff to improve school-wide practices and policies. While this is all about year one and beyond, day one is good, too. These are things like compensation, the district, the staff, and the location. However, none of this matters unless "Year One and Beyond" makes career sense for you.Desired Skills and ExperienceIf you can accomplish the above, you have what it takes.
