Deep understanding of and experience with special education regulationsProven ability to work effectively with students, staff and parents; good human relations and supervisory skillsGreat communication and organizational skillsProficient in educational and administrative technology such as IEP Direct preferredStrong knowledge and/or experience with the design, development and implementation of the elementary school curriculum as it relates to IEP implementation, progress monitoring, and measurement goal settingsInterpretation and application of current Federal and NYS Law and Commissioner’s Regulations regarding special education and student support servicesCandidates with experience with staff supervision and knowledge of APPR regulations will be given preferenceA child-centered philosophy, with proven ability as a rigorous academic leader, innovative planner and effective communicatorDiverse candidates are encouraged to apply FUNCTIONS:Provides leadership in the ongoing development and improvement of instructional programs of special education. Responsible for coordinating all of the services provided to special education students both in district and out of district, along with parentally placed students. The Coordinator of Special Education reports to the Director of Student Services for the functions listed below and other essential responsibilities as assigned by the Superintendent and/or the Assistant Superintendent: Under the direction of the Director of Student Services, coordinates the district’s special services, including special education, speech, occupational and physical therapy, psychological, learning disabilities, and attendance, and works cooperatively with the district administration in the recruitment and selection of personnel for these pre-k - 12 special services Coordinate the operations and Chair the Committee on Special Education, Committee on Preschool Special Education, CSE subcommittee, and conduct manifestation determination hearings for students as requiredDistrict-wide evaluation, planning and implementation of all Special Education/Special Service programs and activities throughout the school year and summer elementary studentsServes as the district’s compliance coordinator for Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973 (K through 12)Assists and/or coordinates transition supports for students from elementary buildings to JHS and JHS to SHS. Work with appropriate staff at all levels to ensure smooth transitions into and between programs Consult with parents and facilitate parental involvementAct as a liaison for out of district placements to ensure compliance with laws and policies; visit all facilities making recommendations, when appropriate, for the students to attend a district program. Schedule visitations to BOCES and other out of district placements, as necessaryAssist the Director of Student Services with coordinating the activities of the K-12 school psychologists and social workers, district’s medical doctors in relationship to special education mandates (K through 12)Assist the Director of Student Services and Building Principals with recruitment, interviewing, selection, and assignment of all new staff members, both certificated and non-certificatedIn coordination with the Director of Student Services and the building administrators, observe and evaluate special education staff, both instructional and non-instructionalMeets regularly with all K-12 special educators, CSE/CPSE chairpersons, and pupil personnel staff Provide training and professional growth opportunities for the special education staff, including research-based strategies and support teachers in effectively meeting the challenges of implementing the curriculum standardsEnsure implementation of curriculum and assessment accommodations, modifications, and adaptations for students with special needsServes as a liaison to SEPTA (Special Education Parent Teacher Association)Assist with the preparation of reports for NYSED and other agencies, Section 611/ 619 grants and districtwide related service providersAssist the Director of Student Services with the development of the budget for special education, ordering of supplies and equipment, and monitoring of expenditures and the development of special education grantsParticipate in building and district administrative meetings as neededWork collaboratively with building administrators preparing teachers’ departmental programs/schedules.Accepts other assignments that may be identified by the Director of Student Services, Assistant Superintendent and/or Superintendent Competitive Salary & Benefits Qualified candidates should submit a letter of interest and an updated resume online at: www.olasjobs.org/longisland by April 30, 2025.
