POSITION: Guidance Counselor High School Placement QUALIFICATIONS: Appropriate NYS Certification Bilingual Preferred Job Summary: School Counselors are certified professionals who are uniquely qualified to address the developmental needs of all students through a comprehensive school counseling guidance program designed to address the academic, career and personal/social development of all students. School Counselors are trained to provide a combination of preventive and supportive services for all students, in the academic, social/emotional, and college/career domains by working collaboratively with administrators, teachers, school social workers, school psychologists, nurses, parents and community members. Through individual, group and classroom activities, school counselors monitor the development of academic and social/emotional skills of each student by developing personalized educational and career plans to ensure current and future success.Duties and Responsibilities:Stay current in all NYSED graduation requirements and facilitate the scheduling of courses to meet student needs. Monitor student academic performance, behavior, and attendance and facilitate appropriate interventions.Interview and meet with each counselee at least once a school year.Maintain student records and protect their confidentiality.Serve as consultant to both parents and teachers in order to help facilitate pupil learning, promote the social and emotional development of pupils, and to further the understanding parents and teachers have of children.Assist the Building Principal & PPS in handling referral services both within and outside the school including child study team, CSE, 504 as circumstances warrant. Counsel students, both individually and in group settings, on matters related to personal and academic areas.Have knowledge and skills related to counseling students in regards to trauma, illness and grief, and providing crisis intervention.Help coordinate and conduct parent conferences and consult with other professional staff and community-based providers to continue support for students at home.Support those students transferring into or out of the District and maintain all appropriate records.Conduct information and training programs for teachers in such areas as social & emotional learning, college & career readiness, study & organizational skills, and self-awareness.Organize and conduct orientation and group guidance programs for pupils and/or parents. Prepare students to successfully make the transition from middle school to high school and help facilitate articulation programs between 8th and 9th grade.Help students navigate the transition from high school to the workforce, military or college including guidance on the application process for each and/or scholarship opportunities.Help plan special grade level and/or school wide events (i.e., assemblies, award programs, graduation, etc.)Provide thorough and punctual reports, data, forms, etc., as requested by administration or required by SED.Perform all other duties and activities as may be assigned by the Building Principal, Director of PPS, or a designee as deemed necessary to fulfill the responsibilities of the position. SALARY: Salary will be determined in accordance with the WTA contract based on the individual’s prior training and level of experience.
