POSITION: Guidance Counselor Elementary Placement QUALIFICATIONS: Appropriate NYS Certification Bilingual Preferred Job Summary: School counselors coordinate educational programs and provide guidance to counselees enabling them to successfully work through those social, emotional, and academic issues common to their developmental stage. School counselors work in a cooperative relationship with parents, teachers and other professionals as they guide young people through a planned course of study appropriate to their individual needs, interests and long-range objectives. School counselors administer and interpret tests, surveys, inventories and assessments to assist students in understanding more about themselves and the options that will be available to them in the world beyond school.Duties and Responsibilities:Administer and coordinate pupil achievement and aptitude testing.Keep pupil cumulative folders and permanent records up-to-date.Monitor student academic performance, behavior, and attendance and facilitate appropriate interventions.Serve as consultant to both parents and teachers in order to help facilitate pupil learning, promote the social and emotional development of pupils, and to further the understanding parents and teachers have of children.Assist the Building Principal in handling referral services both within and outside the school including child study team, CSE, 504 as circumstances warrant. Counsel students, both individually and in group settings, on matters related to personal and academic areas.Help coordinate and conduct parent conferences and Consulting with other professional staff and community-based providers to continue support for students at homeCounsel pupils having difficulties and those new to the district.Knowledge and skills related to supporting students with trauma, illness and grief, and providing crisis intervention.Conduct information and training programs for teachers in such areas as social & emotional learning, college & career readiness, study & organizational skills, and self-awareness.Organize and conduct orientation and group guidance programs for pupils and/or parents. Prepare students to successfully make the transition from elementary school to middle school and help facilitate articulation programs between 5th and 6th grade.Help plan special grade level and/or school wide events (i.e., assemblies, awards, moving up ceremonies, etc.)Perform all other duties and activities as may be assigned by the Building Principal, Director of PPS, or a designee as deemed necessary to fulfill the responsibilities of the position. SALARY: Salary will be determined in accordance with the WTA contract based on the individual’s prior training and level of experience.
