This position will be responsible for supervising and overseeing the UPK program for both District classrooms and off-site locations. This position reports to the Assistant Superintendent of Curriculum and Instruction. The successful candidate will conduct classroom/site visits as well as communicate with site staff, families and staff. In addition, s/he will supervise and oversee the K-6 Math and Science Programs while ensuring compliance with all applicable State Education mandates and regulations.ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: Other duties may be assigned. > Responsible for staff preparation and for revision and implementation of courses of study and programs established by the State Education Department or by the consent of the Superintendent of Schools and approval of the Board of Education. > Interviews candidates for department positions, consults with school principals as to the suitability of each candidate, and recommends the hiring of candidates to the Superintendent of Schools.> Supervises staff within the departments through observation, evaluation, and conference; holds group, building, and department meetings regarding policies, methodology, curriculum, and other pertinent matters affecting the progress of pupils; prepares or supervises the production of local instructional materials.> Determines assignments and assist principals in developing schedules for department staff. > Assists new staff in the departments. Works with principals to coordinate the district New Teacher Mentoring Program. > Assists the guidance staff through department recommendations on scheduling changes and programming which involves students. > Directs the preparation of department-approved unit and final school examinations. > Oversees, in conjunction with the building administration, the acceptance, use, and supervision of student teachers and interns. > Coordinates with department staff, parent notification concerning pupil academic achievement and, when necessary, meets with a student, or a student’s parents, to explore means of improving the student’s achievement.> Responsible for the use of all materials of instruction.> Constructs the annual department budget and initiates purchase orders for all materials used by the department; ascertains that material is received in good order, properly stored, distributed, and used.> Initiates and supervises procedures to ascertain that department files, books, equipment, and supplies are properly cared for, repaired, and inventoried.> Cooperates with other professional staff in maintaining and improving staff and student morale.> Interviews sales representatives and investigates new hardware, software, and other materials at exhibit centers and through local demonstrations; keeps the department staff aware of the teaching potential of such new materials.> Responsible for the work of the department secretaries.> Discusses at the end of each school year with the Assistant Superintendent for Instruction and the Superintendent of Schools the work and progress of the department, together with such suggestions for change and improvement that the department staff and coordinator recommend.> Communicates on a regular basis with Teachers-in-Charge and coordinates their activities.>Represents the school district on national, regional, state, and local professional subject-matter committees and associations; enhances the influence and prestige of the Wappingers Central School District by accepting responsibilities assigned by such committees and associations and by encouraging and providing opportunities for department staff to so participate.> Responsible for the public relations of the departments; prepares news releases; cooperates with the District’s public relations officer in keeping the public informed of the work, plans, and achievements of the department and the students.> Performs such other duties as may be assigned by the Assistant Superintendent for Curriculum and Instruction or the Superintendent of Schools.SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES: Manages subordinate instructional and/or support staff and is responsible for the overall direction, coordination, and evaluation of these employees. Carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the District's policies and applicable law. Responsibilities include interviewing, hiring, and training employees; planning, assigning, and directing work; appraising performance; addressing complaints and resolving problems.QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS: To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. Ability to write complex reports and correspondence. Ability to speak effectively before administrators, staff, parents, and students.MATHEMATICAL SKILLS: Ability to calculate figures and amounts relative to budget responsibilities.REASONING ABILITY: Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.OTHER SKILLS and ABILITIES: Ability to apply knowledge of current research and theory in specific field. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with students, staff, and the community. Ability to communicate clearly and concisely both in oral and written form. Ability to perform duties with awareness of all district requirements and Board of Education policies.
