VACANCY #2024-60Director of ELA, 6-12Minimum Qualifications:NYS Permanent Teaching Certificate, English 7-12 or Reading certification, SAS, SDAMaster's Degree3-5 years of effective teaching experience in either ELA or ReadingPosition Summary:The Director of ELA will lead the implementation of the District's instructional program in ELA to ensure continuous growth of teaching and learning resulting in high student achievement.The Director will ensure that the ELA 6-12 is aligned to Next Generation Learning Standards, culturally responsive and meets the learning needs of all learners.The Director of ELA works closely with the Assistant superintendent of Curriculum & Instruction and other Directors to plan and deliver professional learning that is data-driven and aligned to the District's strategic plan.Major Responsibilities:Supervises classroom instruction, conducts formal observations and evaluates teaching performance for English and Reading teachers.Plans, organizes and presides over departmental meetings for assigned English and Reading teachers.Promotes and facilitates professional development in the areas of English and Reading.Approves all requests for attendance at professional meetings and conferences by teachers in areas of English and Reading.Serves as chairperson of the textbook selection committee for English and Reading textbook adoptions.Prepares special reports for principals, central administration, the superintendent, the Board and the community on the status of regular and special programs in the areas of English and Reading.Assists the Assistant Superintendent of Human Resources in interviewing prospective teachers for English and Reading and supervises demo lessons.Coordinates the work of student teachers within the areas of English and Reading.Advises principals on class loads and teacher assignments.Continuously reviews student data, evaluates achievement and places students in English and Reading courses.Plans, improves, and oversees NYS 6-8 and Regents testing programs for English and Reading.Coordinates summer school classes and recommends teachers for assigned English and Reading.Supervises and coordinates the ordering and use of instructional materials for assigned curricular area.Reviews new trends and publications in English and Reading and shares as appropriate with staff.Prepares and administers the budget for the English and Reading Departments.Assists with implementing of other central initiatives as needed.START DATE: July 1, 2025CLOSING DATE: May 30, 2025Submit letter of interest and resume on-line to: www.OLASjobs.orgPlease do not submit additional materials via: e-mails sent directly to School District employees; the U.S. mail; hand-delivery; or fax machine.RR/js – 5/16/2025 The Uniondale Union Free School District is an Equal Opportunity Employer and does not discriminate against employees, students, or applicants on the basis of age, color, disability, gender, gender identity, gender expression, national origin, political affiliation, race, religion, sexual orientation, genetic information, or veteran status in hiring, educational programs and activities it operates.
