Cottle Elementary School Start Date: September 1, 2026 Position Type: Full-Time, 10-Month Position Compensation: Per the TTA Contract Job Summary Tuckahoe Union Free School District is seeking a dedicated, compassionate, and highly skilled Special Education Teacher to serve students in an 8:1:2 special class setting at William E. Cottle Elementary School. The successful candidate will provide individualized instruction and support to students with significant learning, developmental, communication, and behavioral needs in a structured and supportive classroom environment. This position requires collaboration with a multidisciplinary team to support students’ academic, behavioral, social-emotional, and functional development while fostering an inclusive, affirming, and student-centered learning environment. Job Description The Special Education Teacher – 8:1:2 Special Class works collaboratively with related service providers, support staff, families, and administrators to implement individualized educational programming aligned with students’ IEPs. The teacher will utilize evidence-based instructional and behavioral practices to support student growth and independence while maintaining a safe, structured, and engaging classroom environment. The successful candidate will demonstrate expertise in differentiated instruction, behavior support, social-emotional learning, and communication strategies, including augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) systems. The teacher will monitor student progress, maintain compliance documentation, and contribute positively to the school community. Job Responsibilities Plan, prepare, and deliver culturally responsive and differentiated instruction aligned with students’ Individualized Education Programs (IEPs) Implement specially designed instruction using evidence-based and ABA-informed practices to support academic, behavioral, communication, and social-emotional development Conduct ongoing assessment of student performance and utilize data to adjust instruction and interventions Utilize augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) systems, including PECS, communication devices, and visual supports Develop, implement, and monitor behavioral supports and positive reinforcement systems aligned with Behavior Intervention Plans (BIPs) Collaborate with multidisciplinary team members, including speech-language pathologists, occupational therapists, physical therapists, school psychologists, social workers, and related service providers Communicate regularly with families and staff regarding student progress, strengths, and instructional goals Utilize instructional technology and adaptive materials to support differentiated learning Supervise and support teaching assistants and teacher aides within the classroom setting Foster family engagement through ongoing, respectful, and effective communication Maintain a classroom environment that is safe, structured, predictable, welcoming, and affirming Support students’ social-emotional learning (SEL), functional life skills, and independence Complete required documentation related to IEPs, progress monitoring, data collection, and compliance reporting Participate in team meetings, professional development, and school-wide initiatives Contribute positively to the overall school community and inclusive educational environment Oversee out-of-district placements and partnerships with BOCES and external agencies Support staff through professional development in best practices and inclusive education Assist with budget development and management for special education and student services Promote equitable access to programs and ensure a least restrictive environment for students Support compliance reporting and maintain accurate program documentation Qualifications Required Qualifications Valid New York State Special Education Teaching Certification in one of the following: Students with Disabilities (Birth–Grade 2 or All Grades) Special Education K–12 Special Education Permanent Certification Bachelor’s degree in Special Education or related field Experience developing and implementing IEPs, including goal writing, accommodations, and progress monitoring Strong classroom management and behavior support skills Knowledge of evidence-based instructional and behavioral practices Strong communication, collaboration, and organizational skills Commitment to inclusive, student-centered educational practices Preferred Qualifications Experience working with students with autism spectrum disorders and significant disabilities Experience in an 8:1:2 special class or self-contained classroom setting Knowledge of ABA principles, behavior data collection, and implementation of behavior supports Experience utilizing AAC systems and visual communication supports Familiarity with New York State Alternate Assessment (NYSAA) Strong understanding of Social-Emotional Learning (SEL) practices Knowledge of New York State Learning Standards and Culturally Responsive–Sustaining Education Frameworks Experience using instructional technology and assistive technology to support student learning Strong data analysis skills to inform instruction and improve student outcomes Equal Employment Opportunity Statement Tuckahoe Union Free School District is an Equal Opportunity Employer and does not discriminate on the basis of race, color, religion, creed, national origin, citizenship status, age, disability, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity or expression, marital status, military status, genetic information, or any other characteristic protected by applicable law.
