Position: On-Call Substitute Teacher Assistant / Para Reports to: Classroom Teacher Job Term: On-Call Start Date: Immediate St. Francis de Sales School for the Deaf in Brooklyn seeks a Substitute Teacher Assistant to be on-call as needed for the ten-month school year (September - June.) The Teacher Assistant is responsible for assisting the teacher in providing the best learning environment in developing each child’s potential through individualized instruction. GENERAL RESPONSIBILITIES Assist with bus duty, breakfast, and lunch Prepare materials as requested to aid in instructing the students Assist students with toileting, as necessary Assist in implementing classroom routines and student management Work with assigned student(s) PROFESSIONAL QUALIFICATIONS High School Diploma Sign Language Proficiency, required New York State Teacher Assistant Certification, required PERSONAL QUALITIES Capacity to manage multiple responsibilities and competing demands Demonstrated ability to work in a calm and respectful manner Maintain a positive, encouraging attitude to motivate others. Candidate must enjoy working with special needs children COMPENSATION The rate of pay for this position is $105 per day. ABOUT THE SCHOOL Founded in 1960, St. Francis de Sales School for the Deaf (SFDS) is a privately owned, state supported school for Deaf students from birth through 8th grade located in the Prospect Heights section of Brooklyn. SFDS offers a Parent Infant Program (Ages 0-3), an Early Childhood Program (Ages 3-5) and a School Age Program (Grades K-8). Students attending SFDS are Deaf, Deafblind, Functionally Deaf and Deaf with Additional/Multiple Disabilities including Deaf with Autism and Deaf with Intellectual Disabilities. The school’s mission is to educate the whole child utilizing best practices through a multimodal – multilingual communication approach in an inclusive, barrier-free environment so that each student develops academically, linguistically , physically, socially and emotionally.
