Position Summary: The Behavior Support Specialist is responsible for supporting a safe, structured, and inclusive school environment by addressing student behavior through proactive, restorative, and therapeutic approaches. This role primarily focuses on direct student support while also contributing to leadership efforts related to school climate, behavior systems, and disciplinary processes. In addition, the individual will assume Dean of Students responsibilities as part of the position, supporting the implementation of school-wide discipline practices and student management systems. The position works closely with administration, faculty, families, and support staff to promote positive student outcomes. Primary Responsibilities: Behavioral Support & Intervention Provide direct behavioral and social-emotional support to students, including individual and small group interventions Collaborate with teachers to implement classroom-based strategies and supports Support crisis intervention and de-escalation as needed Monitor student progress and adjust interventions based on data Dean of Students Responsibilities Support the administration of the school’s discipline system in alignment with district policies and restorative practices Investigate and respond to student behavioral incidents Facilitate restorative conferences and problem-solving meetings Maintain accurate documentation of behavioral incidents and interventions Communicate with families regarding student behavior and disciplinary actions School Climate & Systems Lead or support school-wide behavior systems (e.g., PBIS, MTSS, restorative practices) Analyze behavior data to identify trends and inform school-wide strategies Provide professional development and coaching to staff on behavior management and trauma-informed practices Promote a positive, inclusive, and safe school culture Collaboration & Communication Work collaboratively with administrators, school psychologists, counselors, and social workers Serve as a liaison between school and families regarding behavioral and social-emotional concerns Participate in student support team meetings, CSE/MTSS meetings, and other collaborative structures Qualifications: Required: Master’s degree in School Psychology, Social Work, School Counseling, or a related field Appropriate New York State certification/licensure (e.g., School Psychologist, LMSW/LCSW, School Counselor) Experience working with elementary-aged students and behavioral intervention systems Strong knowledge of behavior management, trauma-informed practices, and social-emotional learning Work Year / Reports To: 10-month position Reports to the Building Principal
