SENIOR ACCOUNT CLERKDISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS: This is important clerical work involving responsibility for independently performing more difficult and varied account keeping, reviewing and related tasks. The work requires a general understanding of office rules, procedures and agency policies. Employees doing rather varied work, may receive detailed instructions at the beginning of each new assignment, while those responsible for carrying out steps in a prescribed routine may receive only infrequent general instructions. In either case unusual problems or situations, not previously encountered, are referred to supervisors before action is taken. Work of employees is checked by immediate supervisors or by another step in the account keeping process. Immediate supervision may be exercised over the work of one or more clerical assistants. Does related work as required. TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES: (The following work activities are listed as examples only and in no event shall an employee be limited to only those examples listed here.)Classifies a variety of receipts and expenditures and distributes items according to a prescribed procedure;Reviews and checks complex account keeping records and reports for arithmetical and clerical accuracy, completeness and proper extension;Assigns work, reviews and records work done, and instructs new employees in the specialized account keeping and clerical work of a unit;Conducts routine correspondence on matters where policies and procedures are well defined;Supervises the verifying and reconciling of a number of account balances according to a prescribed procedure;Receives remittances by mail or in person, verifies amount, computes interest and penalties, and posts to book of original entry;Issues receipts for monies received;Posts to journal or ledger from a variety of original entry media;Prepares routine reports of information taken from journal or ledger;May compile payroll data, prepare and check payrolls;May compile and prepare labor, material and operational cost records and reports;Operates personal computer, copier, computing, calculator, and other office machines;Compiles data for, and prepares and analyzes complex financial and statistical records and reports. FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS: Good knowledge of modern methods of maintaining and checking financial accounts and records; good knowledge of office terminology, procedures and equipment; good knowledge of business arithmetic and English; working knowledge of purchasing procedures and terminology; ability to make difficult arithmetic computations rapidly and accurately; ability to acquire familiarity with departmental functions, regulations and legislative requirements; ability to get along well with others; a high degree of accuracy; initiative and resourcefulness; clerical aptitude; some ability to use a keyboard; mental alertness; physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position. Knowledge of double-entry bookkeeping is not required for this class. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Either:(A) Graduation from a regionally accredited college or university or one accredited by the New York State Board of Regents to grant degrees with an Associate Degree in Accounting, Business Administration, or a related field; or (B) Graduation from high school or possession of an equivalency diploma and completion of a business certificate program that includes coursework in accounting and one (1) year of clerical experience involving responsibility for maintaining and checking financial accounts and records; or (C) Graduation from high school or possession of an equivalency diploma and two (2) years of clerical experience involving responsibility for maintaining and checking financial accounts and records.
