SCHOOL BUS MONITOR DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS: The School Bus Monitor assists in the maintenance of appropriate order and discipline on school buses. The School Bus Monitor may be required to communicate directly with students, parents and staffing regarding student discipline problems. In addition, employees in this classification may assist in programs designed to instruct students regarding bus riding safety and discipline. This is routine work performed under the general supervision of the School District Transportation Supervisor. The School Bus Monitor may be required to drive a school bus as needed. TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES: (The following work activities are listed as examples only and in no event shall an employee be limited to only those examples listed here.) Accompanies a school bus for the purpose of promoting appropriate, positive student attitudes and behavior in regard to school bus transportation;Rides school buses and assists bus drivers where discipline problems need to be addressed;Refers discipline problems to appropriate supervisor and parent through written and oral communication as required;Advises students and parents concerning proper school bus behavior;Schedules and participates in student/parent hearings and conferences regarding school bus student discipline problems;Assists in the classroom instruction of the School Bus Safety Program;Participates in all District safety programs and training as related to school bus operations;Drives a school bus as assigned, including field trips. FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS: Ability to get along well with others; ability to communicate effectively with students, parents and staff; ability to understand children; ability to follow oral and written instructions; be neat and clean; familiarity with the various bus routes in the District and their stopping places for pupils; physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Graduation from High School or possession of an equivalency diploma. SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:(A) Must be at least 21 years of age at time of appointment.(B) Must pass a physical performance test.(C) Must complete training and meet all regulations mandated by the New York State Education and Vehicle and Traffic Laws.(D) Must possess at time of appointment and maintain a Class B Operators License.
