MAINTENANCE MECHANICDepartment: Various Classification: Non-Competitive Adopted: 04/19/78Revised:By: Chemung County Commission DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS: This is a broad class with responsibility for performing a variety of semi-skilled mechanical, construction or maintenance tasks. Assists journeymen tradesmen by performing the less skilled duties of his trade or assists skilled workmen in a variety of construction maintenance and repair tasks. General instructions are received regarding routine jobs with detailed instructions provided for new or unusual assignments. The work is performed under varying degrees of supervision depending upon the skill level required to complete the assignment. Supervision will be comprised of a review by immediate observation, or by periodic or spot check and additionally upon completion of the assignment. TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES: (The following work activities are listed as examples only and in no event shall an employee be limited to only those examples listed here.)Performs semi-skilled work in masonry, carpentry, electrical or painting operations;Helps to install and repair wiring systems and electrical fixtures and equipment;Repairs windows, doors, floors, walls and other parts of buildings;Does interior and exterior painting where quantity rather than fine quality of work performed is the principal objective;Assists with installation and repair of general plumbing fixtures, such as sinks, toilets and baths;Assists in cleaning and repairing boilers, pumps, heaters, pipe lines, valves and traps;Performs installation and repair work on a municipal water and/or sewage system;Makes taps on street water mains for service to consumers;Tests for and locates leaks;Assists with the installation and repair of hydrants, mains, services, valves and pumps;Inspects and lubricates hydrants;Assists in locating, raising, lowering, salting and repairing valves;Pours lead and caulks joints in cast iron water mains;Mixes plaster and concrete and assists in laying brick, plastering walls, and finishing concrete work;Oils and greases cranes, air compressors, air hoists and assists with repair work;Repairs, rebuilds and refinishes recreation equipment;Assists in the conditioning and maintenance of athletic and recreation fields and areas;Resurfaces slate blackboards;Operates trucks, automobiles, air compressors and other motorized equipment;Assists a skilled mechanic and individually performs semi-skilled repair work in connection with the repair, maintenance and overhauling of motor equipment;Takes part in general grounds maintenance activities;Serves as general handyman performing a variety of semi-skilled duties.FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS: Working knowledge of rough carpentry, mechanical repair work, rough painting or other construction or maintenance trades; efficiency in the use of hand tools and machine tools; ability to perform semi-skilled manual tasks without constant supervision; ability to learn trade skills and methods; ability to understand and carry out oral and written directions; mechanical aptitude; integrity; physical strength and endurance; good physical condition. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:One (1) year of satisfactory experience as a handyman or laborer in any of the mechanical or construction trades. SPECIAL REQUIREMENT FOR APPOINTMENT: Possession of a New York State Class D Driver’s License.Full-time 40-hour per week position available, Monday-Friday, day shift. Includes health insurance, paid sick and personal days, paid vacation after 1 year.
