POSITION OVERVIEW The Somers Central School District seeks a student-focused educational leader to serve as Assistant Principal of Somers Middle School. The Assistant Principal supports the Principal in providing leadership for the school’s instructional program, culture, operations, and student support systems. The Assistant Principal plays a key role in fostering a positive and inclusive school environment that promotes academic excellence, social-emotional growth, and a strong sense of belonging for all students. As a visible and collaborative leader, the Assistant Principal helps cultivate strong relationships among students, staff, and families and contributes to a school climate where collaboration, respect, and high expectations thrive. Working closely with the Principal, staff, families, and district leadership, the Assistant Principal helps ensure that instructional practices, student supports, and school systems align with district priorities and reflect the developmental needs of middle school learners. The Assistant Principal serves as a proactive leader who supports innovation, continuous improvement, and a shared commitment to student success across the school community. As a member of the building leadership team, the Assistant Principal helps guide staff in maintaining a focus on student learning while ensuring that the school remains a safe, supportive, and engaging environment for all members of the school community. Reports to: Principal of Somers Middle School Supervises: Staff and programs as assigned by the Principal Key Responsibilities Instructional Leadership Assist in ensuring curriculum, instructional practices, and assessment systems align with district goals and student needs. Use student performance data to support instructional improvement and program evaluation. Collaborate with teachers, instructional leaders, and district administrators to strengthen teaching and learning practices. School Culture & Student Experience Foster a positive, inclusive school culture that supports the academic and social-emotional development of students. Help build strong relationships among students, staff, and families. Support systems that promote student behavior, engagement, attendance, and belonging. Promote opportunities for student voice, leadership, and participation in school activities. Maintain visibility and accessibility throughout the school community. Staff Leadership & Professional Growth Supervise and evaluate instructional and support staff in accordance with district and state requirements, as assigned. Conduct observations and provide meaningful feedback to support professional growth. Support the onboarding and mentoring of new staff members. Foster collaborative professional learning opportunities aligned with school goals. School Operations & Organizational Leadership Assist in the effective management of school operations including scheduling, supervision, student arrival/dismissal, and resource allocation. Support the safe, effective, and efficient use of school facilities and resources. Coordinate school programs, activities, and events that support the overall educational program. Assist with emergency preparedness, safety planning, and crisis response procedures. Student Services & Support Systems Work collaboratively with mental health teams, PPS staff, and district departments to ensure appropriate supports are available for students. Support systems that address the academic, behavioral, attendance, and social-emotional needs of students. Lead or assist with student discipline processes in a developmentally appropriate manner. Serve as the building’s DASA Coordinator, receiving, investigating, and responding to reports in accordance with district policy and New York State requirements. Family & Community Engagement Foster strong partnerships with families and community stakeholders. Communicate school goals, expectations, and student progress effectively. Provide opportunities for family engagement and participation in the school community. Qualifications New York State School Building Leader (SBL), School Administrator and Supervisor (SAS) or School District Administrator (SDA) certification required. Demonstrated experience in school leadership Strong knowledge of curriculum, instruction, assessment, and student support systems.
