Position Overview The Somers Central School District seeks a student-focused educational leader to serve as Principal of Somers Middle School. The Principal provides overall leadership for the school’s instructional program, culture, operations, and student support systems. The Principal is responsible for fostering a positive and inclusive school environment that promotes academic excellence, social-emotional growth, and a strong sense of belonging for all students. As a culture builder, the Principal works to cultivate strong relationships among students, staff, and families and to create a school climate where collaboration, respect, and high expectations thrive. Working closely with staff, families, and district leadership, the Principal ensures that instructional practices, student supports, and school systems align with district priorities and reflect the developmental needs of middle school learners. The Principal serves as a visionary leader who promotes innovation, continuous improvement, and a shared commitment to student success across the school community. As the instructional leader of the building, the Principal guides staff in maintaining a focus on student learning while ensuring that the school remains a safe, supportive, and engaging environment for all members of the school community. Reports to: Superintendent of Schools Supervises: Assistant Principal, instructional staff, support staff, and other personnel assigned to the middle school Key Responsibilities Instructional Leadership Lead the development, implementation, and continuous improvement of the middle school instructional program. Ensure curriculum, instructional practices, and assessment systems align with district goals and student needs. Use student performance data to guide instructional improvement and program evaluation. Collaborate with curriculum leaders and district administrators to strengthen instructional practices. School Culture & Student Experience Foster a positive, inclusive school culture that supports the academic and social-emotional development of students. Serve as a culture builder who promotes strong relationships among students, staff, and families. Ensure systems are in place to support student behavior, engagement, and belonging. Promote opportunities for student voice, leadership, and participation in school activities. Maintain visibility and accessibility within the school community. Staff Leadership & Professional Growth Supervise and evaluate instructional and support staff in accordance with district and state requirements. Support recruitment, selection, and onboarding of new staff. Conduct observations and provide meaningful feedback to support professional growth. Foster collaborative professional learning opportunities aligned with school goals. School Operations & Organizational Leadership Oversee the effective management of school operations including scheduling, staffing, and resource allocation. Ensure safe, effective, and efficient use of school facilities and resources. Coordinate school programs and activities that support the overall educational program. Student Services & Support Systems Work collaboratively with district departments to ensure appropriate supports are available for students. Support systems that address the academic, behavioral, and social-emotional needs of students. Ensure smooth transitions for incoming and outgoing students and families. Family & Community Engagement Foster strong partnerships with families and community stakeholders. Communicate school goals, expectations, and student progress effectively. Provide opportunities for family engagement and participation in the school community. Qualifications New York State School Building Leader (SBL), School Administrator and Supervisor (SAS) or School District Administrator (SDA) certification required. Demonstrated administrative experience in school leadership Strong knowledge of curriculum, instruction, assessment, and student support systems.
