Position Overview The Somers Central School District is seeking a collaborative, student-centered educational leader to serve as the Assistant Director of Pupil Personnel Services (PPS). This role supports the Director of PPS in the leadership, coordination, and implementation of programs and services that address the academic, social–emotional, behavioral, and developmental needs of students with disabilities and other learning needs. The Assistant Director plays a key role in ensuring high-quality special education services, compliance with state and federal regulations, effective collaboration with families and staff, and the consistent implementation of inclusive practices across the district. This position requires strong organizational skills and a commitment to equitable, student-focused decision-making. Reports to: Director of Pupil Personnel Services Supervises: Special Education Staff, Related Services Providers, PPS Office Staff, Nursing Staff, and other personnel assigned. Key Responsibilities 1.Program Leadership & Inclusive Practices Support the implementation of districtwide inclusive initiatives, including the LIFE (Learning Inclusively for Everyone) framework. Collaborate with the Director of PPS to analyze data related to student outcomes, program effectiveness, and service delivery. Assist in promoting equitable access to special education services, interventions, and supports across all buildings. 2. Special Education Administration & Case Management Assist in overseeing programs and services developed through the Committee on Special Education (CSE) and Committee on Preschool Special Education (CPSE). Chair and/or participate in CSE and CPSE meetings, ensuring appropriate placements and services aligned with student needs. Support compliance with IDEA, NYSED regulations, district policies, and procedural safeguards. Monitor timelines, evaluations, referrals, and documentation to ensure regulatory compliance. Assist with the coordination of CPSE transitions, registration processes, and incoming student placements. Support planning and implementation of the Extended School Year (ESY) program. 3. IEP Implementation & Service Monitoring Monitor the quality and fidelity of IEP implementation across instructional and related service settings. Collaborate with building administrators, teachers, and providers to resolve service delivery issues. Support progress monitoring, assistive technology implementation, and documentation practices. 4. MTSS & Student Support Collaboration Work collaboratively with building administrators, Directors of Learning, Counseling and Student Support, and other stakeholders to align special education services with MTSS frameworks. Support early intervention efforts and problem-solving teams. Assist in coordinating academic, behavioral, and social-emotional supports. 5. Family Engagement & Communication Serve as a responsive and supportive point of contact for families regarding special education processes and services. Participate in collaborative problem-solving with families and school teams. Support family workshops, informational sessions, and communication efforts in partnership with SEPTA, PTA, and community organizations. 6. Personnel Support & Professional Learning Support supervision and evaluation of special education staff and related service providers as assigned. Collaborate with building leaders on staffing, scheduling, and student needs. Assist in planning and facilitating professional learning related to inclusive practices, compliance, and evidence-based interventions. 7. Compliance, Reporting & Documentation Assist with state and federal reporting requirements, including special education data collection and verification. Support preparation of required documentation for audits, monitoring, and regulatory reviews. Stay current on changes in special education law and NYSED guidance and support staff implementation. 8. Budget & Resource Support Assist the Director of PPS with budget planning, monitoring, and resource allocation. Support coordination of contracts and services with external agencies and providers. Qualifications NYS School District Leader (SDL) or School District Administrator (SDA) certification required. Administrative experience in special education or pupil personnel, or related student support roles. Strong knowledge of IDEA, NYSED special education regulations, and current trends in inclusive education and student support. Demonstrated leadership experience, highly effective communication skills, and a commitment to whole-child development.
