Term: 12 month position Reports to: Superintendent of SchoolsSupervises: Not Applicable Overview of RoleProvide best practices in school communications — from crisis communications to campaigns that help build informed consent for important initiatives such as the school budget, and so much more. This entails providing researched and professionally prepared information/material to the internal & external public via the use of the district websites, social media channels and in print or digital publications. In addition, legal publication and communications requirements shall be met in the capacity as the district’s Public Information Officer (PIO) The Communications Coordinator/PIO shall effectively integrate the communications and public relations programs into a cohesive effort that conveys a consistent message in support of the District’s mission, strategic goals, and objectives. His position cultivates and supports connections across departments, including activities such as recruitment campaigns, ensuring the website is current, and consistently producing understandable and accessible content to various audiences. The Communications Coordinator/PIO must be able to think and react quickly in crisis situations. Doing so entails the development and execution of media strategies that promote a positive public image in the media, organizing interviews between the press and applicable staff, and stepping in to manage and provide essential information during a crisis, therefore minimizing fallout of any public relations crises that may occur. Flexibility to work long hours on an irregular schedule, especially when publicized situations or incidents affect the District is essential. As a direct report to the Superintendent of Schools, the Communications Coordinator/PIO serves as strategic advisor with respect to communications and public affairs initiatives. The individual must demonstrate the ability to maintain confidentiality. Knowledge, Skills and Abilities RequiredTo be successful as a Public Information Officer, an individual must possess superior communication skills, both written and verbal, and must be detail oriented, outgoing, and very media savvy. Self-Directed and Self-MotivatedSelf-starters who can address issues and complete assignments with little to no supervisionAbility to use independent judgment and to gather, manage and impart information to the media and various other internal and external audiences.Ability to provide effective advice and counsel on strategic and/or critical communication issues and to exercise effective judgment.Duties and ResponsibilitiesInternal CommunicationsInitiates and oversees the establishment of integrated strategies, plans, and programs designed to ensure that all communication and public relations efforts are cohesive, consistent, and effective in supporting the mission and advancement goals of the District Plans, develops, directs, and coordinates comprehensive communication programs, to include media, public affairs and publications, in close collaboration with other institutional communications and/or public relations activitiesProduce printed, digital, and video material about the District for dissemination to the public, internally and externallyProvides direct and proactive advice, consultation, and assistance to senior leaders, regarding communication efforts, to include providing direct assistance in researching, disseminating information, and developing messagesExternal CommunicationsServes as the designated spokesperson for the District, speaking directly to the public or media to address questions and represent the DistrictOversees the public information content of the district website, including taking photographs or video at various district events, and coordinating web-based materials and activitiesPlanning and hosting press conferences to announce major news or address crises.Preparing press releases, speeches, articles, social media posts, and other materials for public consumptionProduce printed, digital, and video material highlighting the District for dissemination to the public, both internally and externallyPublic Information (legal publications)Attends and coordinates the publication and simulcasting of Board of Education meetings; also maintaining the Board of Education email accountAssist in establishing and implementing organizational goals, objectives, strategic plans, policies, and operating proceduresRecommends and participates in the development of District policies and procedures; serving on the District policy review committee.Promotions/Community RelationsPlans, develops and coordinates district programs, special events and ceremonies as well as the associated advertising/marketing materialsBuild a social media strategy by maintaining a solid online presence, monitoring the district's brand on social media and managing online communities to ensure respectful and appropriate engagementCoaching employees district-wide on content creation best practicesCoordinates surveys, focus groups, evaluations and assessments of external communications activities in order to determine the effectiveness of the organization's communications plans.
