The South Glens Falls Central School District has an opening for a full time (10-month) Probationary School Counselor for the Middle School.Qualifications1) New York State Certification 2) Such alternatives to the above qualifications as the Board of Education may find appropriate and acceptableReports ToPrincipal and Director of Counseling Salary Salary and work year to be established and determined by the Board of Education and Superintendent of SchoolsDescription To assist students to overcome problems that impede learning and to assist them in making educational, occupational, and life plans that hold promise for personal fulfillment as mature and responsible men and womenTo assist students to make the choices and fulfill the application requirements which will lead to meaningful, appropriate, successful, and rewarding post-secondary educational or employment experiencesTo work intensively with those students who have been unable to function effectively in school programs and to deal immediately with individual student problems of a crisis nature in a constructive, supportive, and non-judgmental mannerResponsibilitiesProvide direct support to students and facultyConsults with classroom teachers concerning the needs of specific students and recommends possible alternatives to address these needsWorks collaboratively with the building principal, teachers, and other members to develop written safety and behavior plansAnnual review and modification of the K-12 comprehensive guidance plan in accordance with programming and curriculumAssists in the counseling of at-risk studentsParticipates in building meetings, Section 504, and Guidance Department meetings as assigned by the Principal or Director of CounselingIdentify and report child abuse and neglectConduct in-school and community consultation and referralsSupport building safety and crisis response teamsMeets on a regular basis with building level administrative team, as well as district wide teamsAny other such duties as assigned by the Superintendent of Schools or his/her designeeProvides after-school and evening programs for parents on school age related topics which include but are not limited to: MTSS, SEL, school transition, course selections, career planning, financial aid, college selection, etc.SECONDARYAssists students with course selections and the overall design of their secondary school experience. Provides guidance and direction for students regarding their post-secondary plans.Assists students with their overall adjustment to the secondary program and with specific school related difficulties which arise.Develops and maintains an accurate listing of graduation requirements and works closely with students and families to ensure they meet all graduation requirements.Schedules each student grades 6-12 for an annual conference, reviews progress, updates records, and reviews career and educational plans.Assists students with all of the processes of college and/or post-secondary vocational school application, including application for financial aid where appropriate.Provides accurate record keeping as it relates to the school testing and assessment process. Works with school administrators to ensure that all students are notified of exams and are called if they are late.Prepare and assist students with post-secondary planning in regards to college & employment applications, recommendations, scholarship and other information necessary to facilitate student planning Maintains an up-to-date library of catalogs, college profiles, scholarship information, occupational information, vocational school opportunities, and such other information.Foster connections with college admissions offices and vocational schools, especially those representing schools in which District students traditionally demonstrate the most interest.Registers students new to the school and orients them to school procedures and the school's varied opportunities for learning.Schedules and implements senior exit interviews.Terms of EmploymentPrimary: Ten months plus 5 additional summer daysSecondary: Ten months plus 13 additional summer daysEvaluationEvaluated in accordance with provisions of the applicable negotiated contract
