OVERVIEW:The Schenectady City School District (SCSD) is in a transformational phase, actively reshaping the district and its schools.A significant level of local, state, and federal attention and investment in the Schenectady City Schools has characterizedthe last few years providing an incredible opportunity to ensure that all of its students graduate prepared to succeed incollege or career. Currently, the Schenectady City School District is seeking highly competent, motivated, dedicated andfully engaged individuals to accept leadership roles throughout the district's schools and Central Office to serve theacademic, emotional and physical needs of approximately 10,000 students through the essential elements of thedistrict’s Strategic Plan. The Superintendent is leading a talented and committed leadership team with the aim of movingSCSD toward world class status and preparing all students for success.POSITION:The Assistant Superintendent for Teaching and Learning establishes the vision and mission of the Office of Teaching andLearning and provides leadership for the development, implementation, and evaluation of the district’s teaching andlearning program, to ensure high quality education and student achievement. This includes the development andimplementation of curriculum and instructional programming, ensuring budget and resource alignment, and supportingthe organization and planning for e district wide assessments as well as the analysis of data and staff development forbuilding use of data in compliance with pertinent state and federal laws, Board of Education policies and instructionsfrom the Superintendent.REPORTING:The Assistant Superintendent for Teaching and Learning reports directly to the Superintendent.RESPONSIBILITIES:Specifically, the Assistant Superintendent for Teaching and Learning will lead a team of administrators to perform thefollowing duties and all other responsibilities as assigned by the Superintendent of Schools and his/her designee:• Coordinates all areas of elementary and secondary instruction, ensuring that district-wide curriculum is verticallyand horizontally aligned and that such curriculum is aligned to New York’s Next Generations learning standards;• Coordinates the development of district policies, regulations and procedures, as related to the instructionalprograms;• Provides guidance and support to teachers and administrators on instructional strategies and best practices;• Works with appropriate staff to review curriculum and instructional materials with an equity lens to ensure thatdistrict goals on equity, diversity and inclusion are adhered to;• Collaborates with the Office of Human Resources, building level principals, curriculum directors, andinstructional coaches relative to the implementation of professional development activities and in-serviceprograms, including Superintendent’s Conference Days and other professional development opportunities;• Prepares reports that are submitted to the Board of Education, which outline the recommendation for textbookadoption and provides continuous academic updates to the board at their regularly scheduled board meetings;• Coordinates all curriculum writing projects;• Recommends curriculum and instructional priorities and programs to the Superintendent of Schools and theboard of education• Collaborates with the Executive Leadership Team and their respective offices to ensure that all learnersincluding students with disabilities and English language learners receive appropriate supports andprogramming;• Assists the Office of Human Resources in recruiting, hiring and providing continuous training to ensure thedistrict has highly effective teachers.• Supervises and evaluates staff under their purview, including Directors and Assistant Directors and officesupport staff;• Reviews, recommends and approves staff conferences for teachers and administrators; .• Collaborates with BOCES staff relative to new staff development programs and initiatives that are offered andmade available to staff;• Prepares curriculum bulletins, guides, courses of study and pamphlets for the purpose ofdisseminating information related to the instructional program;• Plans and prepares for meetings with grade level leaders, departmental meetings and faculty meetings;• Collaborates with colleges and universities relative to the placement and supervision of student teachers andstudent observers.• Overseas teacher mentoring, new teacher orientation, and new teacher seminars;• Attends all Board of Education and cabinet meetings; providing assistance in the preparation and execution ofthese meetings to the superintendent;KEY COMPETENCIES:Individual serving as the Assistant Superintendent for Teaching and Learning will demonstrate the following:• Successful experience in building a high-performance culture and team• Serve as a self-starter innovator supporting the Superintendent's vision, goals and objectives• Strategic outlook and ability to lead with a systems results-oriented perspective• Team player with the ability to engage in effective interpersonal communications• Capacity to identify, diagnose and prioritize key issues• Advanced skills for effective delegation and follow-through• Ability to navigate the challenges of a highly regulated environment• High reliability and executes tasks and directives in timely manner• Competent in the use of data to support continuous school and district improvement• Proficient understanding of Dual Language Bilingual Education (DLBE) Programming and Part 154 of theCommissioner’s regulations relating to English Language Learners.• Proficient understanding of Individuals with Disabilities Education Act and Part 200 of the Commissioner’sregulations relating to students with disabilities.• Outstanding project management skills• Other duties as assignedSALARY: Starting at $145,000, commensurate with experienceLOCATION: Central OfficeQUALIFICATIONS:Candidates must have a Master's degree, and a New York State School District Administrator (SDA), or School DistrictLeader (SDL) certificate by the time of appointment, with 5-8 years of management experience; with at least three ofthose years experience in district central office. Candidates must attach a PDF or a screenshot of their certifications.Successful administrative experience leading teaching and learning activities or curriculum writing is helpful but notrequired. Candidates with effective prior administrative experience in an urban school district with a large racially andeconomically diverse population are preferred.
