POSITION:The Executive Director for Schools plays a crucial role leading principals by helping them increase their instructional leadership capacity as a means of supporting and improving teaching and learning in each school. The focus will be developing a culture of support and continuous improvement for principals and the schools they lead in compliance with pertinent state and federal laws, Board of Education policies and instructions from the Superintendent.RESPONSIBILITIES:Specifically, the Executive Director of Schools will perform the following duties and all other responsibilities as assigned by the Superintendent of Schools and his/her designee:Work one-on-one with principals as partners to grow their instructional leadership capacity through differentiated supportDevelop principal professional learning communities focused on principals’ growth as instructional leadersProvide and broker professional development for principals based on individual and group learning needsModel effective practices as one means of building principal capacity and provide transparent, meaningful and on-going feedback to principals through frequent formal and informal structuresEnsure principals understand their data and how to use it to improve practice, strategies and resultsArticulate a vision for high quality instruction and use this definition as a lens through which to gauge practiceEvaluate principalsProvide recommendations for leadership positions to the superintendentWork to ensure a seamless transition as students move through the school system.Develop tools, processes and systems to assist principals in school-wide effortsSupport or assist schools in implementing curriculum, assessment, intervening and acceleration strategiesAssist principals with interpreting relevant federal and state laws as they relate to school issuesAssist principals in staffing, scheduling and budgeting as neededSupport principals in connecting with other Central Office departments to respond to operational and other needsWork with other administrators to implement the district’s strategic planCollaborate with other members of the District Leadership Team to support the improvement of instruction at all schools and implement sound strategies across content and programsProvide recommendations and support the implementation of major instructional and educational strategies, including partnering with evaluating their effectivenessWork collaboratively with the colleagues in aligning critical components of the work and creating common messages across the systemAssist in the interpretation of district policies, rules and regulations and make recommendations regarding their formulation or modificationAttend Board of Education meetings as appropriate and provide assistance as appropriateProtect confidentiality of records and information gained as part of exercising professional duties.Perform any duties that are within the scope of employment and certification assigned by the superintendent and not otherwise prohibited by law or regulation.KEY COMPETENCIES:Individual serving as the Executive Director for Schools will demonstrate the following:Successful experience in leading a high-performance culture and teamServe as a self-starter innovator supporting the Superintendent's vision, goals and objectivesStrategic outlook and ability to lead with a systems results-oriented perspectiveAbility to engage in effective interpersonal communicationsCapacity to identify, diagnose and prioritize key issuesAdvanced skills for effective delegation and follow-throughAbility to navigate the challenges of a highly regulated environmentHigh reliability and executes tasks and directives in timely mannerOutstanding project management skillsOther duties as assigned Job QualificationsCandidates must have a Master's degree, and a New York State School District Administrator (SDA), or School District Leader (SDL) certificate by the time of appointment, with 3-5 years of experience as an elementary principal. Demonstrated ability to coach adults to build their capacity and show instructional growth as a result and the ability to know and apply instructional practice and strategies that enhance student achievement is desired. Candidates with effective prior administrative experience in an urban school district with a large racially and economically diverse population are preferred.
