Position: School Media Specialist - Elementary LibrarianEffective: September 3, 2024Qualifications:Certified School Media Specialist / LibraryCertified Elementary EducationSalary: In accordance with Saugerties Teachers' Association Contract Position Purpose:Under the general supervision of the Principal, to provide students, and teaching staff with an enriching library/media center environment with a wide range of reading and other educational materials; maintains library collection at school site; develops appropriate programs for students utilizing library and media resources; and instructs students and others on the proper use of the library resources. Essential Functions:- Promotes literacy in the District through collaboration and instruction by developing opportunities for students. - Aligns curriculum with NYS Standards and American Association of School Librarians (AASL) Standards. - Collaborates with classroom teachers to support curriculum by integrating library and grade level curriculum to provide an extension of current classroom learning. - Able to apply instructional and informational technology, and media to learning.- Operates and supervises the media center.- Understands the ethical use of information, technology, and media.- Knowledge of copyright law and reproducing others’ work.- Evaluates, selects and requisitions, appropriate books, aids and other supplies and equipment and maintains inventory records.- Coordinates with administrators and other teaching staff members to assist in the selection of books and other instructional materials; keeps students and teaching staff informed regarding new acquisitions for use in the media center.- Serves as a resource to students to provide research assistance.- Maintains a comprehensive and efficient system for cataloguing all media center materials; assists students and teachers with the use of the system.- Coordinates system of lending library material to students and teachers.- Continues to acquire professional knowledge and learn of current developments in the educational field by attending seminars, workshops or professional meetings, or by conducting research.- Develops a knowledge and understanding of District approved instructional and online materials available to staff and students.- Encouraging the use of instructional technology to engage students and to improve learning.- Organizes and maintains a system for accurate and complete record-keeping and providing student information to prospective colleges and employers, as required by district procedures and applicable laws.- Encourages parental involvement in students' education and ensures effective communication with students and parents.- Ensures that students conduct conforms to the school's standards and school district policies, and establishes and maintains standards of student behavior needed to achieve a functional learning atmosphere in the media center.- Develops and arranges media center displays.- Assists with the preparation and administration of the media center budget.- Trains media center support employees.- Works collaboratively with all stakeholders on the development, creation, and maintenance of building/district initiatives. Additional Duties:Performs other related tasks as assigned by the Principal and other central office administrators as designated by the Superintendent. Equipment/Software:Uses standard office equipment such as personal computers, printers, copy and fax machines, and telephone. Smartboards, Document Camera, Projectors, Google Suite, and Library Databases.Travel Requirements:Travels to two different school district buildings and professional meetings as required.Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: Knowledge of differentiated instruction based upon student learning styles. Knowledge of data information systems, data analysis and the formulation of action plans. Knowledge of applicable federal and state laws regarding education and students. Knowledge of STEAM (i.e. Maker Space) Ability to use computer network systems and software applications as needed. Ability to organize and coordinate work. Ability to communicate effectively with students and parents. Ability to engage in self-evaluation with regard to performance and professional growth.
