NOTICE OF POSITIONPOSITION:The Superintendent of Schools, Dr. Eric Jay Rosser, is interested in receiving applications from qualified candidates for the position of:INSTRUCTIONAL COACH FOR PRE-K - GRADE 5POUGHKEEPSIE CITY SCHOOL DISTRICTQUALIFICATIONS:5+ years teaching experience rated effective or highly effective, in grades K-6, with tenure in the area of elementary common branch, and/or reading, primarily serving low income and minority students;Master’s Degree in elementary education and/or reading, and New York State certification in elementary education and/or reading required;Deep knowledge of elementary literacy and numeracy instruction and early childhood interventions;Outstanding interpersonal skills (communication, problem solving, conflict management, collaboration) with the ability to develop and maintain positive relationships with all staff;Strong organizational skills;Proven track record of working with adult learners, coaching teachers, and delivering professional development;A deep understanding of theories of literacy and math instruction including interventions for effective AIS and ENL services;Thorough understanding of the New York State Standard for ELA and math, the Next Generation Common Core Standards, and current trends and best practices in curriculum design, instruction, and coaching cycle;Strong record of helping students achieve academic success, primarily in minority and low income communities;Significant experience with PCSD literacy and math curriculum and daily lesson planning;Experience in data analysis and utilization of instructional and assessment data to improve instruction;Multi-faceted, multi-skilled, resourceful, and a commitment to help Poughkeepsie students reach a high level of academic excellence;Demonstrated success with special education students and English language learners;Bilingual in English/Spanish preferred;Model positive and healthy character traits and habits, such as being organized, consistent, collaborative, and understanding;Unquestioned integrity and commitment to the Poughkeepsie City School District mission and willingness to serve the community.DUTIES:The Poughkeepsie City School District (PCSD) is committed to providing students and parents with pathways to opportunity that will lead to achievement and success. Through student-centered effective and transformational leadership, school and community engagement, and an unrelenting pursuit to achieve greater school outcomes for children, the Poughkeepsie City Schools is focused on developing and growing greater access, equity, opportunity, and quality across PCSD.The Instructional Coach must take a hands-on approach to improving instruction and effectiveness by working at various levels (classroom-, school-, system-wide) to directly improve curriculum, instruction, and assessment, student learning, and also foster teacher and tutor growth and development.As an advisor to teachers and the leadership team, the Instructional Coach is responsible for four main areas: a) observing and modeling instructional delivery and providing feedback to enhance and support the development of teacher pedagogy; b) supporting teachers in developing targeted lessons and interventions to support students’ specific academic needs; c) guiding teachers through the analysis of student data in and making informed instructional decisions; and d) working with the academic staff (i.e. grade-level chairs, assistant principals, principals) in the school to support the sharing of best practices.This may include modeling lessons in classrooms, helping teachers plan instruction, leading curriculum writing, and facilitating professional development.Functions of the PositionFunction as the internal coach for Ampact/AmeriCorps tutors;Attend and participate in training sessions as provided by Ampact and the District;Act as a liaison between Ampact, classroom staff, tutors, and District staff;Provide an on-site orientation for tutors at each site;Develop a schedule of frequent formal and informal check-ins with tutors;Facilitate building tutor relationships with school-based staff;Collaborate with tutors, classroom teachers, and building administration;Develop weekly schedules for tutors to meet the appropriate caseload of students;Observe tutors at least 1x/month;Work collaboratively with Ampact Coaching Specialist and tutor to determine student intervention status according to Early Learning Corps criteria;Attend Data Review meetings 3x/year to review data;Participate in semi-annual site visits with Ampact staff and PCSD administrators.District-wide Additional ResponsibilitiesProvide targeted support to teachers by effectively modeling, teaching, affirming, supporting, observing, and providing constructive feedback to instructional staff;Assist teachers in organizing and selecting research-based learning strategies and processes that support student success, are aligned to the Common Core standards, and support the implementation of the District curriculum;Identify and assist teachers in implementing methods for motivating students to engage in effort-based work that is cognitively challenging leading to increased student academic achievement in English language arts content areas;Monitor classroom instructional activities in a non-evaluative manner and maintain open communication with school and district staff regarding challenges, achievements, or supports needed;Meet with the principal weekly to determine focused learning objectives for grade-levels, individual classrooms or specific content areas, plan weekly activities, report on progress, challenges, and/or supports needed;Maintain a weekly log that delineates clearly stated objectives for classroom, teacher, content support, plan for progress monitoring, documentation and reflection of specific work, and future plans. Log will be submitted weekly to the principal and Assistant Superintendent of Elementary Education;Facilitate on-going collaboration with teachers to monitor, support, and adjust teaching strategies to ensure equity and excellence/achievement for all students’Participate in on-going professional development and learning to hone and develop skills, knowledge and processes that support learning, instruction, and the requirements of the position;Deliver professional development to teachers using methods proven effective through research and practice;Guide teams of teachers and individual teachers in analyzing student data to develop student learning goals by grade level/content and identify best instructional practices;Implement a system for evaluation and interpretation of test data to improve the quality of student instruction;Function effectively as a member of a team and as a team leader to work with teachers, principals, and district staff;Work effectively to help teachers set up strategies and resources for involving parents in the academic achievement process of their children;Based on the diagnostic teaching, develop with the classroom teacher an intervention plan with an accompanying progress monitoring plan that is aligned to classroom instruction to ensure student progress and achievement;Support all staff members in aligning small group interventions with classroom instruction;Lead the intervention team to assess, plan, progress monitor, and refine as necessary focused instructional interventions; Provide professional development for all staff in implementing appropriate interventions;Keep abreast of instructional practices and interventions that are research-based.APPOINTMENT:Appointment will be made by the Board of Education upon the recommendation of the Superintendent following assessment of training, experience, certifications, credentials, and evaluation of service.
