Job DescriptionIncumbents perform a wide variety of skilled and unskilled manuel tasks. The work involves the performance of tasks requiring some special knowledge or skill that is usually acquried on the job. This class under the direct supervision of a Maintenance Mechanic or Maintenance Formen, maintains grounds by mowing lawns, planting, weeding, applying pesticides, raking leaves, shoveling snow, Assists skilled mechanics in emergency repairs and maintenance tasks, performs other general building and grounds maintenance tasks.Required KnowledgeWorking knowledge of carpentry, mechanical repair work, painting or other construction or maintenance trades; efficiency in the use of hand tools and machine tools' ability to perform semi-skilled, manual tasks without constant supervision, ability to learn mechanical skills and methods; ability to understand and carry out oral and written directions.In accordance with the Safe Schools Against Violence in Education (SAVE) legislation, Chapter 180 of the Laws of 2000, and by the Regulations of the Commissioner of Education, candidates for appointment in school districts must obtain clearance for employment from the State Education Department prior to employment based upon a fingerprint and criminal history background check. Each new employee must consent prior to employment to a security/background check at their own expense through the State Education Department.
