School Counselor Position Purpose: Under the general supervision of the Building Administration, to provide students, parents, administrators, and other teaching staff with information on career and or educational opportunities; administer and interpret career assessment tools; and assist students with in developing educational and occupational goals and plans through out their career. Job ResponsibilitiesGuide students in determining their interests and abilities using a wide range of methods, such as aptitude assessments, interviews and planning materialsCounsel individual learners, working with them to aid in the development of both hard and soft skillsConduct group workshops on a variety of topics, including writing resumes and cover letters, successful job interviewing, career development resources, researching post-secondary academic programs and careersWork with students to overcome issues that could undermine their academic or career successHelp students craft a long-term plan for reaching their career objectivesConnect learners to additional resources such as financial aid, vocational training, extensive counseling and therapy services, medical care providers, or other state and local assistance as neededPlan and publicize the career services center’s programs and events such as workshops, job fairs, and orientation sessionsCollaborate with faculty, staff and other student services divisions to help achieve district-wide goals and contribute to its long-range planningDevelop and deliver classroom lessons for career counseling purposesIndividual student counselingAdditional DutiesPerforms other related tasks as assigned by the Principal and other central office administrators as designated by the Superintendent. Travel Requirements: Travels to school district buildings and professional meetings as required.Job Skills & Qualifications EducationBachelors from an accredited college or university in education discipline applicable to teaching assignment.Masters Degree preferred.Certification as NYS School Counselor, or certification in process Experience: Prior experience as a school counselor with a specific focus on career counseling.
