DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS: An employee in this class is responsible fot assisting teachers and other professional staff in the performance bf those duties that are related to the teaching process. Work is performed under the general supervision of a teacher or other professional staff member. Work is reviewed through the Annual ProfessionalPerformance Review process. Supervision over the work of other employees is not normally a function of this class. May be required to utilize therapeutic crisis restraint techniques. Incumbents in this title may perform some or all of the following as well as other related activities not described.Teaching assistants assist teachers, under the direct supervision of teachers, by performing duties such as:Assist with the teacher roles and responsibilitiesWorking with individual pupils or groups of pupils on special instructional projects;Participates in daily and long-range lesson and classroom activity planning.May plan, prepare, develop various teaching aids, such as bibliographies, charts, and graphs.May present subject matter to students, utilizing a variety of methods and techniques, such as lecture, discussion and supervised role playing.Assists with written and/or performance-based assessmentsAssists in the collection of data when necessaryAssists students, individually or in groups, with lesson assignments to present or reinforce learning concepts, as directed by the teacher.May utilize their own special skills and abilities in instructional areas, i.e.; foreign languages, arts, crafts, music and similar subjects.Alerts teacher to special needs of individual childrenAssists teacher in maintaining neat work areas.Assists with the supervision of children during regular play periods Helps to maintain individual records for each childProvides escort, assistance, and behavioral intervention to children as necessary.CHARACTERISTICS: Good general intelligence, familiarity with classroom routine; ability to establish and maintain good relationships with students, teachers, and co- workers; ability to exercise good judgment in communicating with students as well as others; ability to communicate effectively; ability to establish and maintain discipline; tact and courtesy; dependability; initiative; resourcefulness; good moral character; neat personal appearance;MINIMI Ot [Al IFlO.ATt0N.q: Possess or be eligible to apply for NYS certification/licensure as a Teaching Assistant.
