CERTIFICATION: QUALIFICATIONS FOR the POSITION:4 years of experience as a NYS certified special education teacher or school counselor with the following experience: implementing behavior management strategies for students including those presenting high-intensity behavioral needs; student behavior plan development; developing and implementing appropriate behavioral interventions for students presenting behavioral challenges across all school-related settings.Capacity to act as a mentor/leader regarding behavioral interventions to all relevant staff; strong analytic abilities; ability to communicate effectively both orally and in written form.Ability to establish and maintain strong professional relationships with all staff; and maintain objectivity; good judgment; tact; courtesy; physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position. JOB DESCRPTION:Oneida City School District’s behavior specialist is responsible for working with students who exhibit challenging behaviors, such as aggression, defiance, or impulsivity, in order to create a safe and positive learning environment. The ultimate goal of our behavior specialist is to help students develop the skills and strategies they need to succeed academically and socially while fostering a positive and inclusive school environment. Some of the key responsibilities of our school behavior specialist may include:Conducting behavioral assessments: The behavior specialist conducts assessments to identify the root causes of problematic behaviors and develop appropriate interventions. Developing and implementing behavior management plans: The behavior specialist works with individual students, teachers, paraprofessionals and parents to develop behavior management plans that are tailored to the needs of each student. For example, Functional Behavior Assessments (FBA) and Behavior Intervention Plans (BIP). Maintain binders for all FBA’s and BIP’s for each building with all relevant information and data.Providing training and support to teachers and staff: The behavior specialist provides training and support to teachers and staff on effective behavior management strategies and techniques. Provide direction and guidance to paraprofessionals working with behaviorally challenged students across all school settings.Collaborating with parents and families: The behavior specialist works with parents and families to develop strategies for addressing behavior issues at home and maintaining consistency between home and school. Monitoring student progress: The behavior specialist tracks student progress and adjusts interventions as needed to ensure success. Collect and manage student data and support data-based decision -making regarding student interventions. Working with school administrators: The behavior specialist works with school administrators to ensure that school-wide behavior policies and procedures are consistent with best practices.Collaborating with other professionals: The behavior specialist collaborates with other professionals, such as school psychologists, school counselors, social workers, and speech therapists, to ensure that students receive the comprehensive support they need. Attend all relevant SAT and CSE meetings. Plan and implement staff training for all relevant staff on Crisis Prevention Intervention (CPI) which demonstrates de-escalation strategies, behavior management interventions, non-violent crisis prevention strategies, and models for physical restraint.Perform other relevant duties as directed by the District Superintendent, Assistant Superintendent, and building-level administrators. This position is being funded for the next 3-years with a grant from the Office of Mental Health.
