Posting #90 March 6, 2026 By: Mr. Christopher Pulver DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS: Under direct supervision, incumbents in this class perform a variety of routine tasks required in the maintenance and repair tasks inside school buildings, Does related work as required. EXAMPLES OF WORK: (Illustrative Only) Mows, reseeds, rolls and fertilizes lawns and athletic fields; Cares for flowerbeds; Rakes leaves and hauls away rubbish; Trims hedges, trees and shrubs; Operates a variety of grounds maintenance equipment; Shovels or plows snow and ice from sidewalks and driveways; Patches blacktop on sideways and driveways; Cleans gutters and catch basins; Performs miscellaneous routine maintenance and repair tasks inside school buildings during inclement weather and winter months; May perform other incidental tasks, as needed. GENERAL STATEMENT OF DUTIES: Perform skilled maintenance and repair of District buildings, facilities and equipment in a wide variety of building trades including electrical, plumbing, carpentry repair, and other related activities. REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND ATTRIBUTES: Inspects and identifies equipment or machines in need of repairs. Performs general repairs that do not require a specialized technician. Examples may include repairing drywall, plumbing, carpentry, locksmith, painting, roof repair, repairing doors, routine maintenance on building systems, etc. Working knowledge of building cleaning practices, supplies and equipment and the ability to use them economically and efficiently; familiarity with the operation and maintenance of heating systems; ability to make minor plumbing, electrical, carpentry, and mechanical repairs and perform a variety of routine maintenance tasks; ability to understand and carry out simple oral and written directions; willingness to perform custodial and other manual tasks; thoroughness; dependability; physical condition commensurate with the duties of the position. PREFERRED ACCEPTABLE TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE: Either: (a) a high school or equivalency diploma; or (b) one year of experience in grounds maintenance, general maintenance and repair work, or general cleaning work; or (c) one year of experience in the operation of automotive equipment such as a tractor, truck or plow equipment. SPECIAL REQUIREMENT FOR APPOINTMENT IN SCHOOL DISTRICTS: In accordance with Safe Schools Against Violence in Education (SAVE) legislation, Chapter 180 of the Laws of 2000, and by the Regulations of the Commissioner of Education, candidates for appointment in school districts must obtain clearance for employment from the state Education Department prior to employment based upon a fingerprint and criminal history background check.
