The North Shore Central School District seeks a collaborative and innovative leader for the position of Assistant Director of Special Education for Elementary Schools. The ideal candidate will have experience and expertise in best practices for teaching and learning for students with disabilities that includes a belief in strengths-based approaches, differentiation, Universal Design for Learning, positive behavioral interventions, a deep knowledge of specific disabilities, and an overall belief that student differences are the norm, not the exception. Additionally, the candidate should have experience in facilitating CSE and 504 meetings and possess fluency in the special education evaluation process, special education regulations, and psycho-educational evaluations.The Assistant Director of Special Education for Elementary Schools will work with the Assistant Director of Special Education for Secondary Schools and the Director of Special Education to strategically plan professional development for faculty, new programs for students, and fiscally responsible budgeting for our community. It is essential that the candidate for the position is a highly motivated and hard-working self-starter, a great listener, a skilled communicator, a team player, and believes in every student's high potential for growth and success.Experience as a school psychologist is preferred. Key Responsibilities:Leadership & Program SupportSupport the coordination and continuous improvement of elementary special education programs and services.Promote inclusive, equitable, and student-centered practices aligned with Least Restrictive Environment (LRE) principles.Support the implementation of assured, inclusive experiences for students with disabilities by promoting consistency, alignment, and accessibility of elementary special education services across schools, in alignment with The North Shore Journey.Utilize quantitative and qualitative data (student performance, service delivery, compliance indicators, and progress monitoring) to inform program planning, identify trends, and support continuous improvement.Collaborate with building administrators and district leaders to ensure coherence between special education systems, instructional priorities, and MTSS structures.Assist in reviewing and refining district procedures based on student needs, data trends, and evolving best practices.Compliance, Evaluation & Case ManagementChair and support CSE and CPSE meetings as assigned.Ensure compliance with IDEA, NYS Part 200 Regulations, Section 504, and applicable state and federal reporting requirements.Monitor timelines, service delivery, and documentation using data to ensure accountability and procedural integrity.Support follow-up and corrective action when data indicates gaps in implementation or compliance.Demonstrate working knowledge of psychoeducational, speech-language, occupational therapy, and other evaluative assessments, including interpretation of results to inform eligibility determinations and program planning.Instructional & Staff SupportSupport and supervise elementary special education teachers and related service providers through observations, coaching, and professional feedback.Serve as a resource for instructional planning, differentiation, and progress monitoring.Support instructional practices that promote meaningful learning, student growth, and independence, informed by data and aligned to district priorities and The North Shore Journey.Foster a reflective, solution-focused culture that values evidence-based practices and continuous professional growth.Family & Community CollaborationWork collaboratively with families, staff, and external agencies to support student needs and shared understanding of special education processes.Communicate clearly and professionally in complex or sensitive situations, using data to explain decisions and support transparency.Build strong partnerships that promote trust, clarity, and positive outcomes for students and families.QualificationsNew York State Administrative Certification (School District Leader and/or School Building Leader).Strong knowledge of special education law, including IDEA, NYS Part 200 Regulations, Section 504, and CPSE/CSE processes.Experience chairing CSE and/or CPSE meetings.Demonstrated ability to use data to inform decision-making, program evaluation, and instructional support.Strong organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple priorities and timelines.Excellent written and verbal communication skills.Commitment to equity, inclusion, confidentiality, and ethical decision-making.Experience supporting elementary-level special education programming preferred.
