Position Overview: As a Middle School (MS) Guidance Counselor, your primary responsibility is to support and guide students through their academic, social, emotional, and personal development. You will work closely with students, parents, teachers, and administrators to foster a positive and inclusive learning environment. Your role is critical in helping students navigate challenges, make informed decisions, and reach their full potential.Key Responsibilities:Individual Counseling:Provide one-on-one counseling sessions to students to address personal, social, emotional, or academic concerns.Assess student needs, interests, and strengths to develop appropriate intervention strategies.Facilitate discussions to explore students' goals, ambitions, and career aspirations.Offer guidance and support to help students cope with personal challenges, stress, and conflicts.Group Counseling:Organize and conduct group counseling sessions on topics such as study skills, conflict resolution, stress management, bullying prevention, etc.Foster a safe and respectful environment for students to share experiences, develop empathy, and build social skills.Collaborate with teachers to identify specific student groups that would benefit from targeted counseling.Academic Support:Assist students in course selection, educational planning, and setting academic goals.Monitor and evaluate student academic progress, identifying areas of concern and providing appropriate interventions.Collaborate with teachers and administrators to implement strategies to support student success.Help students develop effective study habits, time management skills, and organizational strategies.Create Master Schedule with guidance from the building principal and collaboration with the High School Guidance CounselorOrganize sixth grade orientation with support from the building principalAttend Team and Child Study MeetingsCareer Counseling:Facilitate career exploration and decision-making processes for students.Provide information and resources on career pathways, college/university options, vocational training, and scholarships.Assist students in developing resumes, preparing for interviews, and understanding the job application process.Collaborate with teachers and administrators to organize career fairs, college visits, and other career-related events.Collaboration and Consultation:Collaborate with teachers, administrators, and parents to develop strategies for student success.Attend team meetings, Individualized Education Program (IEP) meetings, and other relevant meetings to provide input and support.Consult with teachers and parents to address student concerns, behavior issues, and academic challenges.Serve as a resource for staff by sharing expertise and providing professional development on relevant topics.Crisis Intervention:Respond to immediate crises or emergencies involving students, providing appropriate support and referral services.Collaborate with school administration and community resources to address crisis situations effectively.Maintain accurate and confidential records of counseling sessions and interventions.Qualifications and Skills:Master's degree in counseling or a related field, along with appropriate state licensure or certification.Strong knowledge of adolescent development, counseling theories, and evidence-based interventions.Excellent communication and interpersonal skills to establish rapport with students, parents, and staff.Ability to maintain confidentiality and adhere to ethical guidelines for counseling professionals.Experience working with diverse student populations and addressing issues of equity and inclusivity.Proficient in using counseling software, databases, and other technology tools.Strong organizational skills to manage caseloads, maintain records, and meet deadlines.Flexibility and adaptability to meet the evolving needs of students and the school community.Note: This job description is a general overview and may vary depending on the specific requirements and expectations of the school or district.
