This district-wide leadership role provides strategic direction, supervision, and oversight of all K–12 music and visual arts programs, ensuring high-quality instruction aligned with district goals and the Portrait of a Massapequa Learner and Leader. The Director will champion the arts as an essential part of a well-rounded education, honoring the district’s strong traditions while thoughtfully advancing innovation, modernization, and expanded opportunities for students.QUALIFICATIONS:Must hold NYS certification as a School District Administrator (SDA) or School District Leader (SDL).Must have a minimum of five years successful teaching experience in a fine arts discipline. Previous administrative experience preferred.Must have knowledge of curriculum design, assessment, and instructional best practices in arts education.Must have excellent organizational, interpersonal and communication skills.ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:Instructional & Program LeadershipProvide visionary, forward-thinking leadership for the development, modernization, and continuous improvement of the K–12 Fine and Performing Arts programs.Lead the strategic evolution of programs to ensure they remain innovative, relevant, and responsive to the changing interests of students and advancements in the arts and technology.Ensure vertical and horizontal alignment of curriculum with NYS Learning Standards, district initiatives, and the Portrait of a Massapequa Learner and Leader.Develop and expand course offerings and pathways that reflect contemporary artistic practices, including digital and media arts where appropriate.Supervision, Support & EvaluationSupervise, support, and evaluate fine arts educators and related instructional staff in alignment with district expectations.Promote rigorous, engaging, and student-centered arts instruction while fostering a collaborative culture of innovation and continuous professional growth across buildings and disciplines.Build leadership capacity within the department through coaching, mentoring, and distributed leadership structures.Lead the recruitment, selection, induction, and retention of high-quality, forward-thinking fine arts educators.Strategic Program Development and Innovation Identify and lead opportunities for program growth, modernization, and increased student engagement to ensure long-term sustainability.Establish clear systems and structures to ensure coherent, aligned fine arts programs across buildings, grade levels, and disciplines.Use participation data and scheduling analysis to remove barriers and strengthen equitable access to fine arts programs.Collaborate with building administrators to support effective staffing, scheduling, and implementation, while staying current on emerging trends and innovations in arts education and technology.Provide strategic oversight of the fine arts budget, making data-informed decisions regarding staffing, scheduling, equipment, technology, and program development to ensure responsible stewardship of resources while advocating for investments that support excellence and innovation.Events & Community EngagementServe as a visible and engaged leader at district concerts, performances, exhibitions, and arts events, actively supporting students and staff while strengthening relationships with families and community partners. Champion the value and impact of fine arts education within the district and broader community, and represent Massapequa in professional organizations and collaborative initiatives to enhance program pride, reputation, and opportunity.TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT:Twelve month year; salary and fringe benefits as established by the Board of Education.
