GENERAL DESCRIPTION:The Classroom/Behavioral Support Aide is responsible for managing and redirecting the behavior of our special needs students to ensure their protection and safety as well as the protection and safety of, their classmates, peers, school personnel and school property. Classroom/Behavioral Support Aide must be knowledgeable in therapeutic treatment responses appropriate for Elementary, Middle, or High School age level students with disabilities. The Classroom/Behavioral Support Aide must be present around the school building and visible to students and staff. The Classroom/Behavioral Support Aide performs non-instructional duties in a classroom setting under the supervision of the classroom teacher as well as the teacher assistant. MAJOR DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:Implement the school's behavioral counseling programSupervise student behavioral difficulties related to school buses or public transportation travelingSupervise school breakfast and lunch periodsMeet with school administrators to review difficulties experienced by individual students or groups of studentsAssist with training staff on non-violent crisis intervention techniquesParticipate in a required meetings with the school Principal to review behavioral concernsMaintain behavioral data records on student and behavioral interventionsAssist with the school wide student accountability/ reward system that reinforces positive behaviorAssist with the arrival and dismissal process for all students ensuring a safe school environmentProvide behavioral instruction to students through a cognitive values education program to ensure school rules are understood and followed by all studentsInitiate emergency contact with parents or guardians necessitated by student behaviorProvide observational data to outside clinicians and/or prescribing doctors as requestedInstitute use of 911 in case of an emergencyEnsure the orderly and appropriate evacuation of students and staff from our school complex during emergency situationsEnsure that students are always accompanied by staff member and are directly supervised as they move about the school building and school campusEnsure that the classroom is left clean and orderly at the end of the school dayActively support the teacher in addressing student behavioral needsAssess students for signs of emotional difficulties, abuse, or neglect and report these to the teacher, social worker or school administratorAgree to share particular talents and skills to enhance the school programAssist students in the class with medication during the school day in accord with school policies and proceduresAssist in physical care tasks and health related activities as appropriateAssist in the setting up of laboratory equipment, conduct experiments, and perform limited reviews of student laboratory reportsReading to and playing audio-visual materials for children in lower gradesAssist in proctoring and other tasks related to the administration of examinationsAssist in the correction of test papers, recording grades, maintaining of files and preparing statistical reportsManage records, materials and equipmentParticipate in the school's professional development programAssist the classroom teacher with clerical tasks such as student homework collection and correction, report card assistance, parent contact, and incident reportingDevelop a supportive relationship with students and with their parents and guardiansAnd all other job related duties as assigned by the Martin de Porres School administrationQUALIFICATIONS EDUCATION:Must have or obtain within first three months of employment appropriate Crisis Intervention Training for the school (TCI or CPI)High School DiplomaWill obtain NYS Teacher Assistant Certification EXPERIENCE:Minimum of 1 year experience with Elementary, Middle, or High School age level student populationExperience with a special needs student populationRelated non-school experience with at-risk adolescents SKILLS & ABILITIES:Ability to quickly and accurately diffuse difficult behavioral situationsAbility to develop positive relationships with all students at our schoolAbility to provide cognitive counseling to students when receptive to such an activityAbility to have effective communication links with parents and guardiansAbility to effectively communicate with classroom teachers and be supportive of their classroom management effortsAbility to manage data supporting student behavioral challenges and interventionAbility to complete written behavioral incident reportsUnderstanding the range of emotional disturbance present across our student population and provide a safe haven for any student in emotional crisisAbility to provide non-violent crisis intervention techniques and strategiesAbility to work cooperatively with the school bus drivers, school bus escorts, classroom teachers and other school personnelAbility to appropriately supervise students in a classroom setting and while transitioning around the school complexAbility to perform the clerical tasks assigned by the classroom teacher and teacher assistantWillingness to be involved in a program of professional developmentMust be an active and involved partner in the classroom processAbility to work with students in the classroom setting especially when some may be behaviorally challenging=====================================================================This position description contains the major responsibilities required to perform this job.
