The Middle Country Central School District is seeking an Automotive Mechanic I to perform automotive maintenance and servicing. Work is performed on a variety of vehicles and auxiliary equipment used by the District. Related work is performed as required. TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIESServices school buses, automobiles, trucks and other mobile equipment with proper lubricants and replenishes gasoline, oil and water as needed;Inspects and services batteries, changes oil filters, cleans/changes air filters;Drains and refills crank cases; checks and lubricates transmissions, differentials and rear axle housings;Repairs flat tires, mounts tires on wheel rims and inflates tires to recommended pressures; Washes and polishes automobiles, school buses and truck bodies;May inspect vehicles for mechanical defects; perform repairs and mechanical maintenance; may perform safety checks on all vehicles;May occasionally operate a variety of vehicles and auxiliary equipment for service and test purposes; may operate tow trucks, if properly licensed, to bring in disabled vehicles; May attend in-service training sessions provided by manufacturers of equipment in use; Record keeping to include but not limited to vehicle maintenance records; Order parts necessary for repairs. NECESSARY SKILLS AND ABILITIESKnowledge of tools and equipment used in motor vehicle maintenance work;Knowledge of automotive lubricating methods;Knowledge of automotive equipment terminology;Knowledge of the occupational hazards and safety precautions of the trade;Skill in use and care of basic automotive servicing tools and equipment;Ability to determine by inspection of automotive equipment need for grease, oil, water and gasoline;Ability to make mechanical repairs;Ability to carry out simple oral and written instructions;Physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position;Ability to communicate using email;Ability to use computerized software for diagnostics, work orders and inventory tracking. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS Either: (a) Completion of one (1) year of vocational education courses in either a vocational school program or in an apprentice or training program in automotive mechanics; or, (b) One (1) year of experience in minor repairs and preventive maintenance on automotive equipment; or, (c) Satisfactory equivalent combination of the above education and experience. NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENTSPossession of the appropriate license issued by the New York State Department of Motor Vehicles. The type of license required will be determined by the appointing authority with respect to the type of vehicle to be operated; license must be maintained throughout employment in this title. Position requires Class A or B CDL. School bus, passenger and tow endorsements preferred, but not required. Must own basic set of automotive tools necessary for repair and maintenance of a variety of vehicles.
