DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS: This is skilled work responsible for the efficient and workmanlike performance of a variety of automotive and auto body repair tasks. General instructions are received from an Automotive Mechanic Foreman regarding tasks to perform, permitting considerable leeway for planning the details of each assignment. Supervision is exercised over Automotive Servicemen and other helpers. Does related work as required. EXAMPLES OF WORK: (illustrative only) Performs skilled operations in the repair and overhaul of gasoline and diesel motor equipment, including trucks, tractors, graders, bulldozers, and power shovels; Repairs or replaces motor pumps, fuel pumps, generators, carburetors, and shock absorbers; Repairs ignition systems, transmissions, brake systems, clutches, and front and rear axles; Adjusts connecting rods and bearings; Adjusts steering mechanisms and aligns wheels; Makes minor welding repairs to automotive equipment; Greases vehicles, changes oil and oil filter; Tunes engine and sets the timing; Attaches and removes snow plow blades and other auxiliary equipment; Works as a Motor Equipment Operator when directed; May remove and fill dents and straighten door panels, fenders, and hoods; Uses soldering and brazing equipment in repairing dents and breaks in metal; Participates in cleaning sheet metal surfaces using sanding and sand blasting equipment; Assists in replacing and rewiring lights and other equipment removed during auto body repair work; May repair cracks and holes in fiberglass body parts; Applies body fillers and mixers; Assists in filling or rebuilding badly damaged auto parts; May mix and blend paints and apply with spray equipment; May be required to road test vehicles. FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES, AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS: Thorough knowledge of standard automotive repair methods, practices, and procedures used in auto body repair work; demonstrated ability to make difficult mechanical and body repairs to automotive and heavy equipment; demonstrated ability to repair mechanical equipment; familiarity with welding, cutting, and brazing equipment; good knowledge of safety practices; ability to work from plans and specifications; ability to follow rough draft sketches and oral instructions; good motor and hand and eye coordination; manual dexterity; physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Graduation from high school or possession of a high school equivalency diploma and one year of experience in automotive truck or heavy equipment repair work or auto body repair. SPECIAL REQUIREMENT: Incumbents may be required to road test vehicles; therefore, an appropriate level New York State driver's license is required (minimum CDL Class B). Incumbent must possess or be able to obtain a NYS Vehicle Inspection license.
