Title: Executive Director of Curriculum Development (Humanities)Qualifications New York State Certification as a School District Administrator (SDA) and/or School District Leader (SDL)Reports ToSuperintendent of SchoolsDescriptionThe Executive Director of Curriculum Development (Humanities) will play an integral role within the Department of Curriculum, Instruction, and Assessment and will support the Superintendent of School and Executive Directors in providing a clear educational vision for the Humanities (and related) departments, resulting in high-quality teaching and learning. He/she will be directly responsible to Superintendent of Schools and will have the following responsibilities:ResponsibilitiesDistrict Administration Collaborates with building principals on observations and evaluations of Humanities and other faculty as assigned.Assist the Superintendent of Schools, Executive Directors, and District Administration in formulating and reviewing the aims, objectives, policies and procedures in the context of the specific needs of individual departments.Assist the Superintendent of Schools, Executive Directors, and District Administration with the internal organization and management of the departments, in compliance of regulations from the New York State Department of Education.Works collaboratively with the Executive Director(s) overseeing other areas of curriculum areas, such as the Executive Director for Curriculum (Math, Science, and Technology).Ensure, in consultation with the Superintendent of Schools, Executive Directors, and District Administration, that the issues raised in departmental action plans are supportive of the District’s Strategic Plan.Coordinate the design and development, review and revision, and support of grade level and department curriculum elements (Common Core, Next Generation Standards scope and sequence, curriculum guides, etc.), in addition to data point assessments (formative and summative) to reflect national and state standards, as well as Board of Education policy.Support the Superintendent of Schools, Executive Directors, and District Administration in the pursuit of excellence in teaching and leadership across the District.Supervise instruction coaches and other staff associated with Humanities in the classroom.Other responsibilities as assigned by the Superintendent of Schools.Curriculum, Instruction, and Assessment Assist, where appropriate, the Superintendent of Schools, Executive Directors, and District Administration with the monitoring and evaluating of the standards of teaching and learning within departments.Assist the Superintendent of Schools and District Administrators in the development and implementation of policies and initiatives to secure improvements in student achievement.Leads the department Curriculum Advisory Team(s)/Editors and Curriculum Writers in the creation of curriculum documents.Assist the Executive Director for Curriculum (Humanities) and other Executive Directors and curriculum writers in the creation of common and formative assessments.Participate in Building Leadership/Support Team, or similar building team, meetings as needed.Report to the Board of Education as required by the Superintendent regarding each department’s development, initiatives, accomplishments and goals.Assist teachers in implementing effective, research-based methods of instruction and assessment that incorporate differentiated instruction; brain-based instructional models, the use of manipulatives and other teaching materials and innovative lesson design, and also monitor delivery of the content and evaluate the effectiveness of various best practices.Develop and implement departmental schemes of assessment and reporting in line with overall school policy and the New York State requirements, including Academic Intervention Services.Coordinate administration and scoring of relevant New York State 3-8 testing and Regents examinations.Provide statistical information about students’ progress and program information by employing the Data Wise model, and insuring that the data is presented in a format that results in improvements and refinements in instruction that improves student performance.Develop, with colleagues, the range of techniques needed for effective teaching: explaining, instructing, questioning, observing, presenting effective strategy for vocabulary building, transforming meaning, reflecting, assessing, diagnosing and providing feedback.Assess samples of textbooks and other teaching materials at a set time in the academic year and at other times where necessary.Assist the Superintendent of Schools, Executive Directors, and District Administration in the monitoring and evaluation of teaching and learning in individual departments.Assist School Excellence Teams (SETs) in developing building action plans.Assist the Superintendent of Schools, Executive Directors, and District Administration in the recruitment, selection, hiring, and orientation of all new department teachers in grades 7-12.Keep the District informed about needs and developments related to the Humanities (and related) departments. Instructional Leadership Develop learning communities, individuals, and self to enhance performance.Plan, allocate and evaluate work carried out by departments, individuals and self.Other interrelated tasks include:Keeping the Humanities (and related) departments aware of developments within subjects, and communicating changes and directives from the State Education Department regarding standards, assessments and Part 100 regulations.Organizing opportunities, where possible, for members of departments to observe their colleagues teaching.Ensuring that work is displayed throughout the schools to promote staff and student excellence.Compiling departmental action plans after consultation with staff, together with additional administrative documentation as required. Personnel Is responsible (shared) for the overall direction, coordination and evaluation of K-12 classroom teaching staff.Collaborates with building principals in the interview and hiring of teachers.Consults with principals regarding recommendations for tenure appointments.Makes recommendations to the Superintendent regarding tenure or dismissal of elementary, middle, and secondary level administrators and staff members.Assists principals in the writing and monitoring of teacher improvement plans.Collaborates with the Assistant Superintendent for Human Resources for determining the size of the instructional staff needed to carry out instructional programs. Staff Development Take part in the appointment, where appropriate, of staff to the departments.Care for the personal and career development of all staff in the departments, particularly for new teachers and students.Encourage in-service training, both school-based and out-of-school courses.Give members of the departments opportunities to develop their own skills and knowledge.Encourage and promote extra-curricular activities connected with the departments.Share discoveries in effective instruction and best practices.Provide presentations, workshops and seminars on topics for departments and District.Contribute significantly to the Professional Development Committee, including providing leadership of the District’s PD Plan.Work collaboratively with the other Executive Directors on the District’s Mentoring Program and Staff Induction Program. Resources Secure effective resource allocation in the Humanities (and related) departments.Identify instructional material resources necessary to support learning.Develop and maintain resources.Justify proposals for expenditure.Negotiate an agreed budget.Establish and maintain the supply of resources.Monitor and control the use of resources in the Humanities (and related) departments.Control costs through monitoring and controlling activities within the budget.Create and maintain the necessary environment for effective learning.Allocate equipment, books and other teaching materials.Encourage the use of technology and other resources, including building libraries.Use external resources to enhance the learning of students, including theEncouragement, arrangement and organization of performances, visits, field trips, and competitions.Work with the Business Office regarding the ordering and checking of requisitions pertaining to departmental needs.
