Substitute School Nurse, LPN Continuous Recruitment Job Type: Per Diem - Continuous Recruitment Pay Rate: $211.00 (Daily wage - Per Diem) Reports To: School Registered Nurse (RN) / Building Principal / Associate Director of Equity, Assessment & Accountability District & Community Overview The Liverpool Central School District, located in Onondaga County, New York, serves a diverse student population across four quadrants containing elementary (K–2 and 3–5), middle (6–8), and high school (9–12) facilities. We are seeking reliable, compassionate healthcare professionals to join our per-diem substitute nursing team to support the health, safety, and well-being of students throughout the school year. Position Description The Substitute Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) provides per-diem nursing services to students in Onondaga County district schools during the absence of regular health office staff. Working under the direct supervision and direction of a Registered Professional Nurse (RN) or school physician, the Substitute LPN manages routine health office visits, administers prescribed medications, executes specialized healthcare procedures outlined in student 504 plans or IEPs, and provides emergency care when needed. Key Responsibilities Direct Student Care & Triage: Manage student visits to the health office for minor illnesses, injuries, and emergency first aid. Refer complex or severe medical issues immediately to the supervising RN or emergency services. Medication Administration: Administer daily, PRN (as-needed), and emergency medications (e.g., EpiPens, inhalers, glucagon) in strict compliance with NYS Education Department regulations, physician orders, and parental consent forms. Specialized Nursing Tasks: Perform specialized clinical care as delegated by the supervising RN, including blood glucose monitoring, insulin administration support, gastrostomy tube feedings, tracheostomy care, and urinary catheterization. Documentation & Record Keeping: Accurately log health office visits, treatments, and medication administration in student health records in compliance with NYS Education Law, FERPA, and HIPAA privacy rules. Communication & Collaboration: Promptly inform the supervising School RN, building principal, and parents/guardians regarding student health incidents, acute illness, or injuries occurring during the school day. Emergency Response: Maintain preparedness to implement CPR/AED procedures and emergency response protocols during medical crises. Qualifications & Onondaga County Requirements Licensure: Current, valid, and unencumbered Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) license issued by the New York State Education Department (NYSED). Certifications: Active CPR/AED for Healthcare Providers certification (American Heart Association or American Red Cross). State Clearances: Fingerprint clearance through the New York State Education Department (NYSED) prior to hire. Mandated Training: Proof of completed NYSED-approved coursework in Child Abuse Identification and Reporting . Civil Service Classification: Must meet minimum qualification guidelines established by the Onondaga County Department of Personnel / Civil Service. Experience: Minimum 1–2 years of clinical LPN experience; prior experience in pediatric care, public health, or school settings is strongly preferred. Key Competencies & Physical Demands Solid knowledge of general nursing principles, pediatric healthcare standards, and emergency procedures. Adaptability to work across diverse school grade levels (K–12) on short notice. Strong communication and interpersonal skills suitable for working with children, teachers, administrative staff, and families. Ability to respond promptly to medical emergencies, assist students with mobility or medical devices, and maintain composure in high-stress situations.
