KLSD is looking for a thoughtful and knowledgeable educator to serve in the probationary position of Art Teacher at John Jay High School beginning September 1, 2026. Qualifications: Possess a current NYS K-12 Art Education Certification. Experience with secondary art curriculum preferred but not required. Skilled in developing TAB based units of study skills (skilled in most, willing to learn all): digital and analog photography, darkroom developing, photo emulsion screen-printing, filmmaking, animation drawing and painting, and basic ceramics. Familiar with technology-driven art programs, especially Procreate and the Adobe suite, Photoshop, lightroom, Premiere Pro Knowledge of the design process and its application. Demonstrates knowledge of art history, art creation, art terms, materials, and techniques. The right Candidate will: Have an understanding of Teaching for Artistic Behaviors framework, and ability to compose curriculum for this framework. Embrace a student-centered studio environment with a “Yes And” attitude and is committed to student-driven learning experiences on a daily basis. Ability to embrace student ideas and enable students to push forward. Committed to student-centered learning experiences with opportunities for student voice and choice. Fosters a positive and inclusive classroom environment that prioritizes the social and emotional well-being of students and nurtures a sense of belonging. Ability to maintain a working studio and studio inventory. Darkroom experience and ability to maintain a darkroom, photograph, digital editing tools, and peripherals, and the inventory of such. Has a collaborative approach to working with others. Willing to teach a variety of classes as benefits the department from year to year. Have experience with teaching AP Photo/2D, or willingness to receive training. Is willing to lead and follow, both with colleagues and with students. Actively participate in a professional learning community (PLC), engaging in ongoing, collaborative professional learning to refine and enhance instructional practice. Works with colleagues to analyze student needs, share best practices, and implement research-based strategies that improve student outcomes. Possesses strong verbal and written communication skills. Shows enthusiasm, flexibility and willingness to learn new skills/techniques, and has a personal art practice. Anticipated Start Date: September 1, 2026 Hours: Full-Time, (10 month) Salary and Benefits: $64,276 - $152,199 as per the KLDTA contract
