JOB DESCRIPTIONMAJOR RESPONSIBILITIESThe teacher on special assignment assists the assistant superintendent for curriculum, instruction and equity and the principals in instructional and curricular support in English language arts. The major purpose of this role is to improve instruction, assessment, develop curriculum and manage specific functions within English language arts.DUTIESSubject Area ManagementMaintains a written inventory of teaching material and equipment usedEvaluates new materials, equipment and booksAdvises the assistant superintendent for curriculum, instruction and equity and principals about ordering new and additional materials, equipment and booksImprovement of InstructionWorks with teachers and administrators in implementing the ELA curriculum. This shall include:Coordinating, analyzing and reporting information on student progress as it relates to the subject area programMonitoring and providing current information about the progress of students and classes in terms of curricular benchmarkPromoting continuous instructional improvement through the sharing of ideas and techniques among teachers in the subject areaTeaching demonstration lessonsProviding materials and direct assistance to teachers in the subject area as needed or requestedAssures, with the principal and all faculty members, that specific and clearly defined plans for curricular evaluation are developed and implementedPreparing communications in advance of upcoming units for curricular selections, requirements and adjustmentsPlanning, preparing and administering professional learning for classroom teachersCoordinates the aforementioned activities with the department chairs and the school resource leadersCurriculum DevelopmentEncourages the innovation, development and evaluation of ideas, techniques and approaches within the English language arts curriculumEncourages and promotes (in conjunction with the administrative staff) full, professional cooperation among all K-12 faculty members through inter-school meetings, teacher visitation days and subject area meetingsServes as a member of the Curriculum CouncilOther Duties May represent the District in external organizations related to curriculum, such as BOCESGathers and disseminates information to staff through attendance at conferences, networking with others and literature reviewContinuous learning/leading of scientifically based research on best practices in literacy instruction and/or curriculum design and implementationParticipating on various building and/or district-level committeesPerforms additional duties as assigned by the supervisorAUTHORITYThe teacher on special assignment reports to the assistant superintendent for curriculum, instruction and equity and the building principals.APPOINTMENTThe position of teacher on special assignment is an annual appointment.Teacher on special assignment shall, as part of their duties, be scheduled to work a total of twenty (20) days in addition to the approved school calendar. The scheduling of these days shall be mutually determined by the assistant superintendent of curriculum, instruction and equity and the employee.
