The Jericho Union Free School District is seeking a dynamic and experienced communications professional to serve as its Director of Public Information and Community Relations. This leadership role is essential to advancing the district’s mission: to empower a diverse community of learners through rigorous and inclusive academics, foster emotional well-being and resilience, and prepare students to thrive as compassionate, college- and career-ready global citizens. The Director will lead the development and execution of all district communications—including media relations, public information, and community engagement—and will play a central role in supporting the Superintendent as the district’s primary spokesperson by shaping messaging, coordinating public outreach, and ensuring consistent, transparent communication with all stakeholders.Key ResponsibilitiesStrategic Communications & BrandingDesign and implement a proactive, district-wide communications and public relations plan.Serve as a trusted advisor to the Superintendent and administrative team on all matters of messaging, reputation management, and stakeholder engagement.Ensure consistency and clarity of messaging across all district platforms and communications.Media & Public RelationsProvide direct support and counsel to the Superintendent in their role as the district’s spokesperson by preparing press releases, official statements, and responses to media inquiries.Cultivate strong relationships with local, regional, and educational media outlets.Community & Stakeholder EngagementBuild and maintain strong partnerships with families, alumni, civic leaders, and community organizations.Coordinate and promote district-wide events, forums, and outreach efforts that reflect Jericho’s diverse and inclusive values.Develop communications that keep the community well-informed and foster trust throughout the broader Jericho community.Digital, Web & Internal CommunicationOversee district website content, social media presence, and email newsletters.Coordinate, develop and distribute the District Calendar annually.Support school administrators with internal staff communications and morale initiatives.Monitor public sentiment and engagement through surveys, analytics, and feedback mechanisms.Crisis & Emergency CommunicationLead communication efforts during urgent situations or emergencies in collaboration with school safety officials and law enforcement.Maintain up-to-date emergency communication protocols.Ensure timely, accurate, and sensitive information is disseminated to all stakeholders.QualificationsEducation & ExperienceBachelor’s degree in communications, journalism, public relations, marketing, or a related field (Master’s preferred).At least 5 years of progressively responsible experience in school, nonprofit, public sector, or media communications.Prior experience in a K–12 public education setting is strongly preferred.Skills & AttributesExceptional written, verbal, and visual communication skills.Proficiency in social media platforms, website content management systems, and digital publishing tools.Skilled in crisis communications, media strategy, and public speaking.Highly organized, responsive, collaborative, and able to manage multiple projects simultaneously.Culturally competent with a strong commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion.
