Johnson City Central School DistrictDirector of Special EducationThe Director of Special Education supervises and works directly with:Two Assistant Directors (K-5 and 6-12)K-12 Special Education teachersK-12 School PsychologistsK-12 paraprofessionalsRelated service providers (speech teachers, occupational therapists, physical therapists)The Director of Special Education is responsible for:Actively participating in regional meetings related to special education.Advocating for the needs of students with disabilities (SWDs).Assist the Superintendent in the exercise of line authority in meeting the goals and objectives of the Board of Education.Briefing the Board of the Education with data, updates and regular reportsBudgeting & Fiscal Management of the special education department.Chairing Committee for Special Education (CSE) Meetings, and other ad hoc committees as needed.Collaboratively advancing a vision of inclusion, equity, and excellence for SWDs.Collaborating with school counselors, social workers, and other administrators to ensure that the mental health and social-emotional needs of SWDs are met.Completing all district state and federal special education reporting.Coordinating out-of-district placements for Students with Disabilities (including BOCES services).Coordinating targeted interventions and/or corrective action plans related to SWDs, special education and/or related services.Coordinating “Extended School Year” services.Facilitating special education department meetings, psychologist meetings, and related service provider meetings.Leading manifestation meetings, informal parent conferences, and mediations.Making appropriate educational arrangements and referrals, as well as monitoring special education programs for students placed out of the district.Making staffing recommendations to the Central Office leadership team.Managing Medicaid compliance proceduresManaging adaptive technology (in collaboration with the Administrator for Managed Technology Services)Managing BOCES utilization of special education services and placements.Providing professional learning experiences related to special education and related services, in collaboration with the principals and the Assistant Superintendent for Teaching Learning and Accountability.Regularly reviewing and making recommended updates to the district’s policies and procedures on students with disabilities.Representing the district in due process hearingsPerform other related duties as may be assigned by the Superintendent.This position comes with a highly competitive, comprehensive benefits package.
