Universal Pre-Kindergarten (UPK) School Monitor - Part-Time (Transportation Department) Job SummaryThe Hyde Park Central School district seeks a Universal Pre-Kindergarten (UPK) School Monitor. This is a critical part-time position within the Transportation Department. The primary responsibility is to ensure the safe, orderly, and respectful transportation of our youngest students, specifically those enrolled in the Universal Pre-Kindergarten program. The Monitor works closely with the school bus driver to supervise students and manage behavior while on the school vehicle, adhering to all District and New York State regulations. Key ResponsibilitiesStudent Safety and Supervision:Supervise UPK students during all phases of transportation, including boarding, transit, and disembarking, ensuring their safety and security at all times.Ensure all students utilize and remain properly secured in appropriate child restraint systems (e.g., seatbelts, car seats) as required.Assist students, especially those with special needs or mobility challenges, in safely entering and exiting the school bus, including the operation of any specialized equipment (e.g., wheelchair lift, tie-downs).Behavior Management:Maintain a positive, calm, and orderly environment on the bus, addressing discipline issues according to established District and Transportation Department procedures.Serve as a positive role model and encourage safe and appropriate conduct from all students.Report any student misconduct to the bus driver and the appropriate building or transportation administrator.Communication and Support:Assist the bus driver with maintaining accurate time logs and student counts.Communicate with the bus driver regarding route needs, directions, and student-specific information (while maintaining confidentiality).Be a friendly and professional representative of the Hyde Park CSD, greeting students and parents/guardians at stops.Ensure all students are released only to an authorized parent, guardian, or designee upon drop-off, following all established procedures for young children.Emergency Preparedness and Training:Be knowledgeable and prepared to assist the driver with emergency evacuations and drills.Provide basic first aid and care to students as needed and report any injuries or incidents immediately.Perform pre- and post-trip checks to ensure no child is left on the bus and to identify any safety hazards or maintenance concerns. Required Qualifications and SkillsHigh School Diploma or equivalent.Must demonstrate a genuine care and patience for young children, specifically 3- and 4-year-olds.Ability to follow written and oral instructions accurately and quickly.Excellent interpersonal and communication skills for interacting with young students, parents, and school staff.Must successfully pass a physical performance test conducted by the Transportation Department, demonstrating the ability to perform the physical requirements of the job (e.g., lifting, kneeling, bending, assisting with restraints, assisting in emergency evacuation).Ability to handle sensitive and confidential information with discretion.Successful completion of a background check, fingerprinting, and all required clearances as per New York State law and District policy.Physical DemandsThe physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.Ability to sit for prolonged periods of time.Ability to lift, push, or pull up to 125 pounds occasionally (e.g., in an emergency evacuation, securing equipment).Ability to bend, stoop, kneel, crouch, reach, and climb the bus steps multiple times daily.Ability to quickly assist or move children in an emergency situation.Ability to successfully complete the required physical performance test.Hyde Park Central School District’s new Presidential Perks is a special program designed to help our essential staff save money.
