Hewlett-Woodmere Public Schools, one of the leading school districts on Long Island, seeks an exceptional, experienced, visionary educational leader to serve as Director of STEMPosition OverviewThe Director of STEM leads the strategic design, implementation, and continuous improvement of the school’s comprehensive STEM program across all grade levels. This instructional leader drives academic excellence by developing vertically and horizontally aligned PreK-12 frameworks, coaching teachers, analyzing student performance data, and fostering innovation in mathematics, science, technology, engineering, and computer science. The Director works collaboratively with school leaders, teachers, and families to ensure all students develop strong mathematical reasoning, scientific inquiry, computational skills, and problem-solving abilities necessary for college readiness and 21st-century careers. This appointment is a full-time, 12-month position.Key ResponsibilitiesCurriculum Development and Instructional Leadership• Design and implement coherent, standards-based PreK-12 mathematics curriculum frameworks aligned to state standards, ensuring vertical alignment and horizontal integration of numerical fluency, algebraic thinking, geometric reasoning, and data analysis• Design and implement coherent, standards-based PreK-12 science curriculum frameworks aligned to Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS)• Develop and implement PreK-12 engineering design and computer science curricula aligned to state and national standards• Lead development of mathematics instructional sequences, pacing guides, and assessment systems that build quantitative reasoning, numerical operations, and mathematical modeling skills• Lead development of science instructional sequences emphasizing inquiry, experimental design, and laboratory investigations• Research and evaluate mathematics and science curriculum materials, laboratory equipment, manipulatives, and educational technology platforms to support rigorous, engaging instruction• Create project-based learning opportunities integrating engineering challenges with mathematical problem-solving and scientific investigationTeacher Development and Coaching• Provide professional development, coaching, and mentorship to mathematics, science, engineering, and computer science teachers• Conduct classroom observations with targeted feedback on mathematical discourse, use of manipulatives and visual representations, inquiry-based instruction, and differentiation strategies• Facilitate professional learning communities where teachers analyze student work, share effective practices, and develop common assessments• Support teachers in implementing differentiated instruction for diverse learners, including intervention and accelerationData Analysis and Academic Outcomes• Establish and monitor key performance indicators for student achievement in STEM disciplines• Lead data analysis meetings to review assessment results, identify trends, and develop targeted intervention strategies• Track student progress toward grade-level benchmarks and disaggregate achievement data to identify and address opportunity gapsProgram Innovation and Strategic Leadership• Oversee robotics programs, maker-space initiatives, coding clubs, mathematics competitions, science olympiad, and STEM challenges• Establish partnerships with universities, engineering firms, research institutions, and technology companies for real-world STEM experiences• Identify and pursue grant opportunities to expand STEM resources and professional development• Serve as a key member of the school leadership team, contributing to strategic planning and whole-school improvement initiatives• Develop and manage the STEM budget, ensuring compliance with New York State Learning StandardsQualificationsRequired• Master’s degree in Education, Mathematics, Science, Engineering, Computer Science, or related field• Valid New York State School District Administrator (SDA) or School District Leader (SDL) certification, or eligibility to obtain• Minimum 3-5 years of successful teaching experience in STEM-related subjects with demonstrated impact on student achievement• Minimum 3 years of instructional leadership experience (department chair, grade-level leader, coach, or similar)• Deep content knowledge across multiple STEM disciplines with expertise in mathematical reasoning, analytical thinking, and computational skills• Strong knowledge of data-driven instructional improvement and student outcomes management• Experience coaching and developing teachers, including conducting observations and providing feedback• Proficiency with Microsoft Excel, Google Suite, data management systems, and educational technologyPreferred• Advanced degree in Mathematics Education, Science Education, STEM Education, or Educational Leadership• Background in mathematics or science curriculum development or instructional coaching• Familiarity with research-based mathematics programs (Singapore Math, Eureka Math, enVision Mathematics) and NGSS implementation• Experience with coding platforms and computer science curricula (Code.org, Scratch, Python)• Experience writing and managing education
