Harborfields Central School District is seeking a dependable, skilled, and motivated individual to join our Facilities Department as a Maintenance Mechanic II – Grounds. This is a 12-month, district-wide position primarily responsible for the maintenance, care, and improvement of District grounds, athletic fields, outdoor facilities, and related equipment. The successful candidate will take pride in maintaining safe, attractive, and well-kept school grounds for our students, staff, and community. Responsibilities may include, but are not limited to: Maintaining District lawns, landscaped areas, athletic fields, playgrounds, and other outdoor spaces Mowing, trimming, edging, seeding, fertilizing, aerating, and performing general turf maintenance Preparing and maintaining athletic fields for practices, games, and District events Planting, pruning, and maintaining trees, shrubs, flowers, and landscaped areas Operating and maintaining grounds equipment, including mowers, tractors, utility vehicles, snow removal equipment, and other machinery Performing routine maintenance and minor repairs on grounds equipment and machinery Assisting with irrigation and drainage systems Maintaining walkways, parking areas, fencing, signage, and other exterior District property Performing seasonal grounds preparation and clean-up Participating in snow and ice removal operations, including early morning, evening, weekend, and emergency assignments as required Assisting with set-up and clean-up for school and community events Following all District safety procedures and appropriate equipment operating practices Working collaboratively with other members of the Facilities and Grounds team Performing other related duties as assigned The successful candidate should possess: Experience in grounds maintenance, landscaping, turf management, equipment operation, or a related field Knowledge of grounds care practices and the safe operation of landscaping and maintenance equipment Mechanical aptitude and the ability to perform minor equipment repairs Ability to perform physically demanding work in varying weather conditions Ability to lift, carry, bend, climb, and operate equipment safely Strong attendance, dependability, and work ethic Ability to work independently and as part of a team Professionalism and the ability to work effectively in a school environment Valid New York State driver's license, if required Ability to meet all applicable Suffolk County Civil Service requirements for the title of Maintenance Mechanic II Experience maintaining school grounds, athletic fields, municipal property, parks, or similar facilities is preferred. Salary and benefits will be in accordance with the applicable collective bargaining agreement and District policies.
