The Homer Central School District is seeking qualified candidates to serve as our next Transportation Supervisor. This is a competitive class Civil Service position. This is a 12-month leadership position. The successful candidate will oversee all transportation related employees. The successful candidate must possess or be eligible to possess a 19-A and a SBDI. The Transportation Supervisor may be required to drive a van or bus in emergency situations. The work involves the dispatching of drivers and school buses for the district and ensuring that all school district buses are staffed with drivers following established routes and prepared time schedules. The work is performed under the general supervision of the School Business Administrator and/or Superintendent with wide leeway allowed for the exercise of independent judgment. Supervision is exercised over the work of transportation employees. Does related work as required.TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES: (Illustrative only) Confers with the School Business Administrator and/or Superintendent to develop bus routes and implements changes as necessary; Dispatches drivers and buses on assigned daily routes; Supervises bus drivers/transportation employees to assure compliance with school district policies relating to safety, courtesy, and reporting procedures; Conducts periodic training and safety classes to reaffirm safe driving practices and resolve potential problems; Trains new drivers and gives road tests; Assigns substitute bus drivers for extra-curricular trips; Resolves complaints regarding bus routing and scheduling, designation of bus stops, transportation personnel and student bus discipline; Prepares bus driver performance evaluation reports; Makes recommendations regarding the hiring and firing of transportation personnel; Assists in the preparation of the annual transportation budget; Works with the Head Mechanic to schedule maintenance and repair activities for school district vehicles; Inspects procedures, equipment and bus garage building to insure that safety standards are maintained; Purchases spare parts and supplies for motor equipment repair and maintenance; Prepares written specifications for major vehicle and equipment purchases; Prepares periodic reports regarding fuel consumption, bus utilization, mileage, equipment and supply inventory, maintenance and repair activities and employee payrolls; Operates a school bus in the event of an emergency or shortage of bus drivers; May operate two-way radio equipment to provide bus drivers with information regarding road conditions, school closings and route variation; Prepares correspondence and communicates with families as needed.FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS: Thorough knowledge of transportation methods as applied to the safe and efficient operation of school vehicles; Good knowledge of the geography of the school district; Good knowledge of the New York State Motor Vehicle Law and applicable regulations of the Public Service Commission as related to school bus operation; Skill in the safe and efficient operation of motor equipment; Ability to organize and conduct training and safety courses for school bus drivers; Ability to plan and supervise the work of others; Ability to prepare and maintain written reports; Ability to operate a personal computer and utilize common office software programs including word processing, Excel, spreadsheet, databases and e-mail; Ability to get along with others; Sound judgment; Dexterity; Physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Graduation for high school or possession of a high school equivalency diploma and four (4) years of full-time experience or its part-time equivalent in the transportation services industry. NOTE: Study in a technical school, community college, or post high school certificate program in automotive mechanics or technology may be substituted for the required experience on a year for year basis. SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: Eligibility for the appropriate level NYS driver’s license and applicable endorsement/certifications at the time of application (19-A, SBDI). Possession of license and applicable endorsements/certifications (19-A, SBDI) at time of appointment or within a prescribed time period. **Must take, pass, and score in the top three score bands to be eligible for permanent appointment**If working under this title in another jurisdiction a transfer can be requested
