2024 – 2025 SCHOOL YEAR VACANCYDepartment of Bilingual Education & World LanguagesINTERNAL CANDIDATES ONLYPOSITION: NEWCOMER FAMILY AND SIFE STUDENT SUPPORT SPECIALIST QUALIFICATIONS: Valid New York state TESOL certificationKEY RESPONSIBILITIES: This position plays a crucial role in supporting the successful integration of newcomer families and Students with Interrupted Formal Education (SIFE) within the bilingual education program. By leveraging your unique experiences and bilingual skills, you will collaborate with staff and families to create a welcoming and supportive learning environment for all students. Professional Development Leadership (Extended Wednesdays)Develop and Lead Targeted PD Sessions: Design and lead professional development sessions during extended Wednesdays for various stakeholders including teachers (3-12), school psychologists, social workers, guidance counselors, security personnel, and nurses.Topics: Focus on topics relevant to supporting newcomer families and SIFE students:- Cultural competency and sensitivity training - Strategies for building rapport with newcomer families- Understanding the academic and social challenges faced by SIFE students- Effective communication strategies for working with families with limited English proficiency- Trauma-informed practices in the classroom- Utilizing home language and cultural backgrounds to enhance learning Delivery: Employ engaging and interactive methods like workshops, simulations, and group discussions.Collaboration with Director: Collaborate directly with the Director of Bilingual Education to develop instructional focus plans that address the specific needs of SIFE students. Stakeholder Support:Comprehensive Support: Provide comprehensive support for all stakeholders involved in supporting newcomer families and SIFE students:Offering individual consultations to address specific concerns or challenges.Developing and sharing resource materials on navigating the school system and accessing available support services.Connecting families with community resources and organizations. Quarterly Family Workshops: Organize and lead quarterly workshops specifically focused on supporting newcomer families. Topics may include:Navigating the school system and communication with teachersAccessing resources and support services available for familiesStrategies for supporting student learning at homeCultural exchange and building connections with the school communityAdditional Responsibilities:Stay updated on best practices and resources related to SIFE education and newcomer family support.Assist with translating documents or interpreting meetings for families and staff as needed.Contribute to a positive and collaborative work environment by sharing your experiences and insights.Overall Goal:This position leverages the unique perspective and cultural understanding of a SIFE student to bridge the gap between newcomer families and school staff.
