The operator is responsible for the safety and the conduct of the children who are passengers. The work is performed under the supervision of the Head Bus Driver or Transportation Supervisor with considerable leeway is allowed the operator in carrying out the details of the work. Additionally, the work involves custodial care of groups of children in the maintenance of order and discipline within school buildings and on school playgrounds. Work is performed in accordance with established policies and procedures under general supervision of a supervisor or school administrator, with some leeway allowed for the exercise of independent judgment. Does related work as required. TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES (ILLUSTRATIVE ONLY): Operates a school bus on a regular schedule or on Special occasions obeying all the traffic laws;Checks the operating condition of the bus before staring on a trip;Notifies the proper authority of any mechanical failure or lateness;Keeps the interior and exterior of the vehicle clean and neat;Informs the children about safety practices and reports undisciplined students to the proper authority;Maintains records of mileage, routes, times and incidents;Prepares and maintains maps of routes and pick up points;May be required to operate a station wagon or other similar vehicle;Maintains order and intercedes as necessary in school lunch rooms or gymnasiums.Assigns tables in a school lunchroom and sees that children eat and behave in an orderly fashion;Directs children in hallways between classrooms;Maintains order on playgrounds or gymnasiums and may suggest games or planned use of time;Helps keep desks and tables clear and clean;Performs such other specific duties as may be assigned.FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES & PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS: Good knowledge of driving safety practices and traffic laws and regulations; ability to operate a bus under difficult driving and road conditions; ability to make minor repairs to the vehicle; the ability to understand and to follow simple oral and written directions; ability to get along well with children and command their respect; mechanical aptitude, mental alertness; dependability; good powers of observation; ability to understand and direct children; ability to get along well with students and command their respect; physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Possession of the appropriate level New York State Driver's License. Drivers must be at least twenty-one years of age and must satisfy the requirements for School Bus Driver as set forth in the Rules and Regulations of the NYS Commissioner of Education.
