Position The Greenburgh Central School District is seeking a dependable, detail-oriented Custodian to help maintain a clean, safe, and welcoming environment for students, staff, and visitors. The Custodian is responsible for the daily cleaning, maintenance, security, and general upkeep of assigned school buildings and grounds to ensure facilities are well-maintained and ready for each school day. This position plays a vital role in supporting the District's educational mission by providing a safe, healthy, and functional learning environment. Key Responsibilities Include: The responsibilities below outline the primary duties of the position. This list is not intended to be all-inclusive, and additional related duties may be assigned as needed: Clean and sanitize classrooms, offices, restrooms, hallways, stairwells, cafeterias, and other common areas. Sweep, mop, vacuum, dust, polish, and perform routine floor care, including buffing and operating custodial equipment. Empty trash and recycling containers and replace liners. Clean and disinfect restroom facilities; replenish soap, paper towels, and other restroom supplies. Wash windows, walls, sinks, fixtures, furniture, and other building surfaces. Set up and break down classrooms, meeting spaces, auditoriums, and other areas for school events and activities. Secure assigned buildings by locking doors and windows and following established opening and closing procedures. Monitor facilities for maintenance, safety, or security concerns and report issues promptly. Perform minor maintenance tasks, including replacing light bulbs, repairing window shades, painting, and assisting with minor plumbing, carpentry, electrical, and mechanical repairs. Assist with receiving, loading, unloading, moving, and storing supplies, furniture, and equipment. Deliver packages, materials, and messages throughout the District as needed. Maintain school grounds through seasonal duties, including snow and ice removal, mowing lawns, trimming shrubs, raking leaves, and other groundskeeping responsibilities. Follow all District safety procedures and properly use, store, and maintain cleaning chemicals, equipment, and supplies. Work collaboratively with administrators, faculty, staff, and fellow custodians to maintain a clean, safe, and welcoming school environment. Perform other custodial, maintenance, and operational duties as assigned. Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: Knowledge of custodial cleaning methods, sanitation practices, and safe handling of cleaning chemicals. Ability to safely operate custodial equipment and tools. Strong organizational and time-management skills with the ability to prioritize work effectively. Ability to work independently with minimal supervision and as part of a team. Strong communication and interpersonal skills. Commitment to maintaining a safe, respectful, and inclusive learning environment. Ability to identify and report maintenance and safety concerns promptly. Qualifications High school diploma or equivalent preferred. Fingerprinting clearance is mandatory. Demonstrated ability to adhere to written and verbal instructions. Excellent communication, collaboration, and organizational proficiencies. Previous custodial, facilities, maintenance, or groundskeeping experience is preferred but not required. Ability to safely operate custodial equipment and use cleaning products in accordance with established procedures. Ability to perform physically demanding work, including lifting up to 50 pounds, standing, walking, bending, climbing, reaching, and repetitive movement throughout the workday. Dependable attendance, punctuality, and a strong work ethic are essential. Availability to work evenings, weekends, and overtime as required, including snow and emergency response assignments. Bilingual/Multilingual candidates are strongly encouraged to submit an application. APPOINTMENT : Appointment to this position shall be made by the Board of Education upon the recommendation of the Superintendent, following a comprehensive review of the candidate’s training, experience, certifications, credentials, and demonstrated qualifications.
