SCHOOL BUS MONITORThis position involves responsibility for assisting in providing and maintaining safe conditions for school buspassengers. The School Bus Monitor assists with the safe evacuation of the vehicle in emergency situations. Work isperformed under the general supervision of the Supervisor of Transportation. Related duties may be assigned asrequired.TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIESAssists in providing and maintaining safe conditions for school bus passengersEnsures students are seated promptly after boarding and remain seated until the bus reaches its destinationAssists student riders with problems while on the busExits the bus before students to ensure traffic conditions are safe and assists children in crossing to the curbAssists with seatbelts and safety equipment, including wheelchair lifts, for students with special needsUses the “bus conduct report” to document and report behavior concernsReinforces basic behavioral and learning expectations to promote safe and appropriate bus conductAssists students in boarding and exiting the busMay determine seating assignments to maintain orderMay perform food service or custodial duties on a substitute basisSKILLS AND ABILITIESGood knowledge of school bus safety practicesAbility to get along with children and command their respectAbility to communicate effectivelyAbility to manage adverse situations calmly and appropriatelyAbility to lift and move students as necessaryWillingness to work under varying weather and environmental conditionsTact, courtesy, and dependabilityStrong observational skillsPhysical condition commensurate with the demands of the positionMINIMUM QUALIFICATIONSHigh School Diploma or equivalent preferredExperience working with children desirableAbility to pass required background clearancesHOW TO APPLYInterested candidates should apply on OLAS and through the district’s website www.gcsny.org or contact the TransportationDepartment for additional information.
